WAYFINDING
By using different shapes, sizes, colours, and even digital printing, high visibility or tactile paving can be specified to incorporate signage and demarcation. This is incredibly helpful in assisting the safe and efficient movement of people and can be utilised around hazards such as steps or along cycleways.
With shared spaces on the increase, certain textures and colours of paving can be used incredibly effectively to discreetly delineate and segregate areas where there are no distinct kerbs or pavement, for example pedestrian/cyclist routes and carriageway crossings.
Equally, deterrent paving can be used to define ‘no go’ zones, preventing vehicle access to open public spaces, discouraging pedestrians from disturbing wildlife areas, or signalling the boundaries of a particular area.
VISUAL APPEAL
The ultimate beauty of flag and block paving is the design flexibility that it offers. An immense variety of streetscapes and features can be achieved through the myriad sizes, shapes, patterns and colours of paving available.
Cleverly designed laying patterns, featuring the right colours and textures, can assist with spatial awareness, making areas such as dark alleyways, for example, look and feel larger or lighter.
It carries proven therapeutic benefits too. Within care homes or hospitals for example, a beautifully designed area of paving that integrates sympathetically with the soft landscaping can enhance areas and lift the spirits.

Quite often, people will enjoy a public area without even realising which components are making the space enjoyable. When public spaces are designed thoughtfully and well, they should be inviting but unobtrusive. Usually, this is where the paving blends with the street furniture, planters, water features, lighting and signage to create a seamless solution that is subtly and aesthetically pleasing.
From a maintenance perspective, paving can be easily dealt with as it can be safely and conveniently lifted to access areas beneath the surface where the works are required, then reinstated without any loss of visual appeal. Sadly, the affected area is often patched with another material which results in unsightly scars on the surface - however this needn’t occur if local authorities make sure the contractors provide an adequate maintenance regime and reinstate any pavers correctly.
ECO CREDENTIALS
With any scale of development, you will need to plan to mitigate any flood risk and permeable paving can be used across all pedestrian areas, driveways and access roads to effectively assist the plot’s drainage requirements.
For local councils and planning authorities, eco-living is becoming more and more important. Natural stone should be ethically sourced, and reconstituted stone should be manufactured responsibly. Much paving nowadays is manufactured using recycled aggregates and compounds, rendering it a more sustainable solution that many tend to believe.
