It’s not just about the bricks themselves though - the mortar used can be just as important. Imperial Bricks has partnered with Limetec, the hydraulic lime mortar specialists to offer a Heritage range of regionally appropriate lime mortars. Hydraulic lime mortar is essential when working with handmade bricks, allowing for natural movement and a textured finish that works with handmade brickwork perfectly. And we have another new partnership with Bebbington, which produces a brick tint designed to instantly ‘weather’ and age the appearance of brickwork. Thanks to Bebbington, we’ve been able to create bespoke tinting shades to colour- correct bricks, offering a remedial solution to mismatched brickwork.

Brick matching in action

Thanks to our wide range, complementary products and experience in the industry, we’re able to offer a brick matching service, choosing the right size, colour, region and weathering. For example we worked on a Grade II listed manor in East Kent (main pictures), where an extension and indoor swimming pool had to be sympathetically matched to the existing buildings. Our experts, working with Graham Oates Associates, recommended a bespoke mixture of imperial-sized Reclamation Georgian and Country Blend bricks, along with matching lime mortar.

Expert advice

We introduced a RIBA certified CPD, ‘Revolutionising Restoration’, that gives those involved in the decision-making a better understanding of how manufacturing methods vary between handmade, wirecut and pressed bricks and how that determines which bricks suit which properties and regions.

Our CPD covers all these specialisms, and takes you on a journey through the history of brickmaking, how to recognise regional variations and how to specify the right brick types and sizes for the period, style and geographical area of the property. Brickwork bonds (patterns), brick weathering, overcoming common problems and sustainability are also covered.
