Pony Club Tetrathlon Championships

Around 300 Pony Club Members took part in this year’s Tetrathlon Championships At Bishop Burton College & Beverley Leisure Centre, including those competing in the increasingly popular Grassroots competition which gives more novice riders the chance to experience a Championship environment.

There are four phases to Pony Club Tetrathlon; swimming, shooting, riding and running. To be successful, competitors must be skilled horse riders as well as all-round athletes, with a steady hand for the shooting phase.

After three days of hard fought competition, winner of the coveted Wilkinson Sword for winning Open Individual Boy was Paddy Erskine from the East Down Branch. Paddy, who finished on 4,462, scored maximum points in the ride phase and won the shoot phase. He was the only Open boy to pick up a Gold Award. “The win feels really good!” commented Paddy, who is doing a degree in Geography at Queen’s University in Belfast, “it was fifth year lucky for me.”

Paddy, who finished 3rd last year, enjoys doing Tetrathlon with his family and friends and hopes to come back next year with his younger brother and cousin. He continued to thank Area 17 Tetrathlon Co-ordinator Helen Rea for her help and support.

In her first year at Open level, the individual top spot went to Llangeinor Hunt’s Mali Howell who finished on a score of 4,304. Mali took the 2016 Intermediate honours, so the win was unexpected. “I hoped I’d do well, but I didn’t think I’d win!” said an excited Mali, who thanked her parents and Coaches.

Mali is awaiting the results of her GCSEs, and would like to become an equine physiotherapist. Competitively she’d like to try Eventing and Pentathlon.

Isobel McTaggart (Lauderdale Hunt) won with 13,360

Pony Club Tetrathlon Chairman, Tim Vestey, said “I am delighted that Pony Club Members from all over the UK have enjoyed an excellent competition. The atmosphere has been fantastic, the competitive spirit intense, and yet, as is always the case with Tetrathlon, sportsmanship prevails and friendships have been forged or cemented which will hopefully endure for life.”

Pony Club Tetrathlon rules are similar to Modern Pentathlon, with points accumulated for performance across the phases. Several Pony Club Tetrathletes have graduated to compete in Modern Pentathlon at the highest level, including medal winners in three Olympic Games; Georgina Harland, Kate Allenby MBE and Heather Fell. Coral Kennerley began her shooting career competing in Tetrathlon, and represented Wales in two events at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, coming 6th in the 10m Air Pistol Women’s competition.

At Open Individual Girls level, the individual top spot went to Llangeinor Hunt’s Mali Howell
