the big test

Harrison Howard – Headcollar

The company says: Made from polypropylene fibre, with thick, padded fleece-lined nose and headpiece.

Designed to fit the horse’s skull comfortably, avoiding pressure on those sensitive areas. Hook stud billet. Silver Grey. RRP £9.99 www.harrisonhoward.co.uk

Our tester, Sally Burns, says: This headcollar was lovely and soft, with thick padding on the head piece which didn’t rub the horse.

The nose and head band are fully adjustable which is great as I had it on a couple of different horses and it was so easy to adjust. It was of a good quality as the eyelets didn’t come off, as I have had with some headcollars in the past. Very easy to wash, came out lovely and looked brand new again.

Nettex – Traditional Tack Conditioner

The company says: A blend of glycerine and natural oils that nourish and protect leather to leave a lustrous shine after every use. The penetrating formula keeps leather soft, supple and weather resistant all year round and contains antibacterial properties to prevent cross infection from shared tack. Won’t rot stitching and will stop the build-up of mould and mildew on tack and other leather equipment. RRP: £4.55-200ml, £8.75-500ml www.nettexequine.com

Our tester, Val Williams, says: Such a useful product. We have found that it not only cleans the leather but leaves a very nice shine. It is a very good every day protection and leaves the tack very supple. So easy to use as you just spray on, and when dry, buff up with a sponge or soft cloth to leave a great shine. A tackroom staple!

Equetech – Patent Bridle Number

The company says:

Designed for complete ease of use and simplicity. No fiddly, clumsy card numbers that get easily lost or break!

Designed with Velcro attachments to attach to your bridle and Velcro numbers. 100% polyester. RRP: £13.25 www.equetech.com

Our tester, Rachel Thomas, says: I really, really liked these! The Velcro was what made it so good, as you didn’t have to mess around trying to tie it to your bridle and use many plaiting bands to try and keep it in place! Plus changing the numbers was so easy. I’ve cracked many a number and number holder trying to remove the previous numbers with great difficulty, then you can’t remove the old ones, so you shove new ones in on top, then there are so many in it they get wedged and you can’t do anything with it at all!

So these are an absolute god send! Makes it so easy and quick. It also means that your number isn’t a great rigid thing slapping your horse in the face when it’s wearing it. I love, love, love it.
