GroomAway – Patent Shine for Leather

Equisafety – EquiProcam Head Camera

The company says:

Shines, feeds, cleans and protects all in one. Leaves a patent shine to all leather; Provides non-slippery polished dry surface; Gives a professional shine that lasts for weeks; Helps to weather proof. A little goes a very long way. 200g. RRP: £11.50 www.flyaway.ltd.uk

Our tester, Emma Woolley, says:

This really is the most fantastic product for shining up the patent leather areas of your tack and boots! I found it very useful because you only need to apply a small amount and gently rub over, no buffing needed, which I have had to do tirelessly with patent leather before! It leaves a faultless finish and is also a great product to keep in your grooming bag in the collecting ring to apply again for that extra bit of shine just before going into the competition arena. Aside from the high quality finish this product gives, it also helps to weather proof leather and provide a non-slip finish!

Horseware – Amigo Leather Headcollar

The company says: Made from good quality eco-friendly leather. Quick release cheek clip, padded noseband and headpiece with brass name plate for engraving. Brown or Black. Sizes: Pony, Small Horse, Standard Horse, Large Horse. RRP: £53.95. www.horseware.com

Our tester, Paul Malone, says: This just screams quality! It has a very solid brass buckle on both sides of the head piece to allow adjustment or release from either side, there’s also a very sturdy quick release buckle to allow easy fitting or removal. The leather is of a very good quality, is broadly cut and has slight padding under the poll and the noseband. Apparently, the leather is ‘eco friendly’ in the way that it is made, but I certainly can’t tell any difference. The noseband is adjustable on the underside, allowing a wide range of adjustment. There’s also a brass name plate on the left hand side to allow personalisation. This is a really lovely addition to any horse’s wardrobe, and a safer option for those who frequently travel.

The company says: GPS for exact evidence of your ride – there and back; 4k Video and 20 MP for excellent quality photos and video; 160 minutes of battery; GYRO – Advanced video stabilization; 158g in weight and 2.5” in height; Voice control; 170-degree wide angle lens; Helmet strap included. RRP: £149.99 (2-month payment plan available)

Did you know that if you have to use your camera video for evidence in a court of law, it must show the video from the start of the hack to the end? Just displaying the accident will not be good enough for a many reasons. Therefore the battery times shown in our research would not be acceptable as the rider would have to change the battery. Not only would that be dangerous, but also means the full hack could not be shown.

Ellen Shaw, Barrister at Lincoln House Chambers explains: “Video camera footage can be crucial both for an effective investigation into any incident and as evidence at trial, whether that be in a criminal or civil case. The video is most helpful if your entire ride is recorded - providing only partial footage means it could be suggested that the footage of the incident has been edited or partially deleted.” www.equisafety.com

Our tester, Caroline Powell, says: If you are anything like me and shy away from technology then this camera is the one for you.

It can be as simple or as technical as you like it to be. A very handy teaching aid as you can record and play back whilst your rider is still on board making it easy for instant changes during your lesson. Great fun for videoing your jumping rounds, enabling you to bore your friends and family to death watching it over and over again! But also very educational as you are able to see where improvements can be made. I have shown a few non-horsey people the footage of going up the gallops and they are surprised at the speed that horses travel at!! Along with the mandatory amount of hi-vis you need to wear in order to venture on to the roads nowadays, this neat little item will not make it safer to ride on the roads, but will ensure that if an incident does happen there is some video evidence. Handy sometimes just to make sure the correct details are available in case of an accident. Can also be used for evidence if an incident occurs whist hacking.

Comes with a hat band which has anti-slip elastic meaning there is very little chance of it moving or coming off. The two buttons which are needed while using the camera on a horse can be operated with your gloves on, and once you want to start video, the record button speaks to you telling you that you are videoing and that’s it, you are ready to go. Also has a built in camera.

There is no need to worry if the great British weather takes over as the camera is waterproof and can take quite a drenching, plus battery lasts long enough even for the most serious hack! It is worth fiddling around for a bit to get the correct position on your hat as we got a few nice sky videos the first few times, but once you find the correct spot it is very easy to make sure it doesn’t move From a numpty non techno person the process was very simple. Mount camera on hat, work out on/off and record button, get a few sky videos, readjust, get an ears and neck video, readjust, position sorted...press play and ride off... get home, download and watch with a cup of coffee! job done!!!

Top tip.... be careful what you say as the built in microphone is quite sensitive
