the big test

Leovet – Leather Foam

The company says: An all-in-one creamy grooming foam that cleanses leather and replenishing its oils. It also preserves and protects with anti- oxidants while also giving a superb shine, too! Easy-to-use and time-saving! 200ml. RRP: £7.99 www.agrihealth.ie

Our tester, Terri Graham, says: I have never been a fan of the ‘All in One’ cleaner, it seeming to be a tall order to remove grease and replenish leathers original oils and leave the leather supple and shiny. However this product DOES deliver all the above.

It comes in a pump spray canister, shake and apply directly to article to be cleaned, then remove dirt grease with a soft cloth and shine. Easy and quick and great to take to shows in case a spruce-up is needed too. Also good on leather shoes handbags etc. Colour test fastness, and take up of product. I will keep a canister in the tackroom for sure.

Also great to get kids tack cleaning!

LeMieux – Snug Boots

The company says: An ideal all round boot suitable for both schooling and jumping, as the name suggests snug by name, snug by nature. Emphasis is on flexibility and breathablity during work with a perfect combination of fetlock support & tendon protection. 3D Mesh and perforated shock absorbing lining plus super soft Lycra binding keeps legs cool and rub free. Quick Release user friendly caps make for easy positioning & elasticated fastenings anchor securely, ensuring stability. Black or White. Medium and Large; Front and Hind) RRP: £42.50 (pair) www.horsehealth.co.uk

Our tester, John Collier, says: A fresh type of boot to me, being used to normal Velcro type brushing boots. They give protection around the leg but with more emphasis to the back of the leg and support the back of the fetlock, and are fastened with a stud clip. They’re more like a tendon boot crossed with a brushing boot. So, do I like them? Yes, I’m warming to them. I’ve been using them on a part bred. They are a snug fit and the large size was too tight for the Irish hunter which I had intended to use them on. They are wearing well, look smart and don’t inhibit the horse’s way of going. They are ventilated mesh and washable and have the latest bells and whistles. The best thing is that with the clips the Velcro doesn’t clog and stop working. I think as we replace, that these boots will become our preferred choice for the school horses to work in; we already use this company’s brushing boots.

NAF – Five Star Sheer Luxe Cleanse & Condition

The company says: For a luxurious finish, this deep cleansing formula is easy to use and leaves a non-sticky natural finish. RRP £9.99 www.naf-equine.eu/uk

Our tester, Chris Grant, says: This is the first spray on leather cleaner that I have been impressed with and I used it to clean very dirty tack.

The first thing I noticed was the lovely natural smell followed by the thick consistency of the liquid, this was great as it sits long enough on the top of the sponge to enable application to tack. With my usual minimal tack cleaning effort, I like something easy and effective and this certainly ticked all my boxes.

Used with a damp sponge, it created a light lather which lifted the dirt and grease. I really like that it didn’t leave the tack sticky but instead very supple with a nice dry shine. My tack still looked freshly cleaned even after a few days, not going dull like usual. Similarly, after my good bridle got soaked at a show, I rubbed it over with the product and this kept it lovely and soft, without the greasy feeling that one usually finds after using a spray on cleaner.

I am definitely very impressed and will continue to keep a supply of this in my tack room.

Nettex – Premium Leather Balm

The company says: An easy to apply rich cream to cleanse, nourish and restore dry leather back to its natural condition. Easily absorbed it penetrates deep into the fibres of the leather. This clever formula does not build up on the surface of the leather which then leads to the build-up of dirt and grime ‘jockeys’. It keeps leather soft, supple and durable against wet weather and revives old, dry leather back to its natural condition. 300ml. RRP: £6.99. www.nettexequine.com

Our tester, Rob Williams, says: This really is a great product and cleanses, revives, shines and nourishes all kinds of leather. It is amazing for leather which hasn’t been used for some time and doesn’t look it’s best to say the least, but this Balm helps restore it back to the original condition. Has become our tack room ‘go-to’ product and when used on saddles do not stain your jods or breeches which some products have done in the past.
