intro
That old favourite, the British weather, is yet again the main topic of conversation but there’s nothing positive about the recent rainfall and the resultant ‘deluge’ of competition cancellations. Deciding whether or not to enter a competition on grass has been something of a lottery recently, as some areas have stayed dry whilst others have experienced significant rain and the resulting financial impacts can be significant. Eventing has no option, but the availability of good all-weather surfaces has enabled dressage and show jumping fixtures to go ahead as planned, giving many competitors a ‘Plan B’ albeit one that causes a bit of midnight oil burning by show secretaries trying to fit in last minute entries!
Everyone who competes in affiliated competitions is potentially going to be ‘dope tested’ at some point, but how much do you know about what’s involved and why you might fail? We’ve got some practical advice and some very helpful readers experiences to give you all the information you need - starting on page 42.
Back at home, it’s the time of year when thoughts turn to planning for the colder, darker months ahead, which means bedding supplies, yard equipment and dry storage space. There’s plenty of help and advice in this issue.
Caring for our ‘golden oldies’ is something many horse owners experience over the years and knowing how to assess and then manage their needs can make all the difference to both their health and wellbeing. As more veteran horses and ponies are still able to enjoy ridden work and even competition, advances in veterinary care, correct nutrition, saddle fit and good stable management are all important. There’s expert advice starting on page 12.
If you keep you horse or pony on a livery yard, check out our advice - and don’t miss the section on Rider Fitness, as there are some super tips from top professional riders to help you and your horse to better enjoy your riding. Here’s hoping for some lovely autumn weather ahead ...
