the big test Back on Track® – Royal Protection Bell Boots

The company says: These boots, with their highly impact resistant outer, are lined with Welltex™, a fabric that is infused with ceramic particles that reflect a long-wave, infra-red ray back into the soft tissue, thus supporting blood flow to the coronet area. The energy that is generated brings nutrients to the muscles and helps remove toxins through the lymphatic system, allowing the muscles to relax and work more efficiently. The horse becomes more supple and ready to work sooner during warm-up, and it encourages the horse to relax post- work. Small; Medium; Large. RRP: £37.00. www.backontrack.com

Our tester, Barbara Clarkson, says: These are hard wearing boots made from well-constructed fabric. We have used them for competing as well as routine wear to stop one of our horses from pulling shoes off in the field. They have stood up to daily use for weeks and every type of inclement weather without any problems. Because they are so robust they look hardly used. They stay in place well and are generously sized. Velcro fastenings make them easy to put on and take off. The boots have heat retaining and reflecting properties so can also aid recovery from injury or relieve pre-existing conditions. I have some clothing from this company myself and can certainly vouch for the heat exchanging properties. So I am in no doubt that these boots would have the same effect on the horse too. They’ve been a pleasure to use, and I’d recommend them for all equestrian activities.

NAF – Leather Balsam

The company says: An intensive conditioner designed to penetrate and nourish tack, keeping it luxuriously soft and supple. With free sponge inside for easy application. RRP £9.99. www.naf-equine.eu/uk

Our tester, Chris Grant, says: Upon unscrewing the lid off the pot, I was first met with a lovely aroma of beeswax. Knowing the great properties of beeswax in a healthcare products, this assured me immediately that it would be good for my tack. Following application it certainly didn’t disappoint. Its solid appearance allowed it to be used sparingly, as I soon realised that once it had been warmed up by the heat of your hand, it stuck to the sponge before melting onto the tack, thus this easy application meant I didn’t have to keep going over and over to allow it to sink in. My tack looked and felt nourished after use, without the sticky feeling that can sometimes occur. Despite using it regularly I don’t seem to have made an impression on the quantity of product left in the pot! I used it after the cleanse and condition, finding them to complement each other well, leaving my tack feeling luxurious and appearing well looked after.

Horze – Prescott Cross Noseband Bridle

Mark Todd – Ergo Saddlepads

The company says: Offering superior levels of comfort and protection, these new ergonomically designed saddlepads have a mesh spine for improved airflow, while the cut-away shape helps reduce the risk of overheating during exertion, yet still allows space for competition numbers or team embroidery. Other features include reinforced girth loops and front strap fastenings which attach to the saddle’s d-rings for secure positioning and quick, easy fitting. Black, Grey, White or Navy all with decorative cord trim. Size: Full. RRP: GP Style - £29.99; Jump Style - £26.99. www.wefi.co.uk

Our tester, Pam Harrison, says: This is a super design and it does everything you would expect. Easy to attach to the saddle, it stays in place and doesn’t ‘sag’ through the spine so the airflow is maintained, which must be more comfortable for the horse. I used this for training (I was sent a grey one), so it was washed quite often, dried quickly and it came up good as new every time. The padding layer didn’t compress, it didn’t rub the horse’s back anywhere and it looks smart too. Not just a practical addition to the tack room, it’s a top performer.

The company says: An ergonomically-designed headstall and crown offers exceptional fit for this durable, stylish bridle. A soft, fleece- lined centre disc is the focal point of this superior quality bridle for eventing or show jumping. The figure 8 noseband provides just enough leverage and control for most horses while jumping and galloping. The intercontinental rubberized reins on this bridle with subtle colour lining offer superior grip and control.

Stainless steel fittings, hook and stud for bit and rein attachment. Black or Brown. Sizes: Pony, Cob, Full, XFull. RRP: £57.99 www.horze.co.uk

Our tester, Ben Hobday, says: I really liked this bridle. The overall appearance was very smart, the leather was good quality, and there was a soft, comfortable headpiece plus sheepskin on the grackle noseband. The reins, which were provided with the bridle, were ideal but a bit too thin for me as I prefer to use thick rubber reins. Overall, I think this bridle is a great buy especially for the price.
