The Verbal CommuteTM Keeping a Good Sense of Humor

Santa Rosa, CA. ~ When you see this circle with the DL, it means that there’s a direct link to the story and or contact in- formation when you read the paper online with your computer or ‘smart’ tablet. It’s funny because al-

though I use technology for running my paper, I generally still like to read stuff printed on real paper. I like the feel, the ability to set it down and pick it up without having to charge it! My wife gave me a Barnes and Noble

‘Nook’ device that’s

pretty cool, but a paper novel is novel in itself these days! In the next couple of months

we are publishing a series of Fall & Holiday Guides that have so much to offer! As usual I will also publish for free, any FREE event you or someone you know is having. You may have a 10-word headline max, and up

to 50 words maximum. I nor- mally charge $65 for this, but as a giſt back to all of our readers I will offer this giſt, one per per- son, as a thank you!.Te only rule is: It must be a free event!

Being

a publisher of an all positive paper has many wonderful attributes. Most of the

time this

paper runs like a finely tuned ma- chine. Sometimes people will call to complain about something I did wrong. For instance, one of the jokes I ran last month(on page 3, joke # 2) about a guy who goes to the doctor only to find out he has cancer and Alzheimer’s but is glad he doesn’t have cancer. Tat was a true story/joke from a friend that died not to long

ago. He was diagnosed with both, and at 94 tried to light of it. He said those things(the joke) in one of his more lucid moments,

which

were fading. He had to make fun of himself. He made a joke about him- self and we both laughed

together.

He said he had to laugh about it or cry as tears formed in his eyes. But he was 94. He said at his age, something

was bound to happen to him or his body. I called the gentle- man back mid August, who had complained that I would publish such a tasteless joke and apologized that he was of- fended. I mentioned that what I do here at the paper is meant to inspire. It’s meant to make people feel better about them-

selves. I published the joke for my friend because I admired his sense of humor, sense of life and for his strength in a most trying moment! My life is pretty smooth for

the most part. From time to time there are a few hick-ups and a few stones I trip on, but I can tell you, it is much better than the alternative circum- stances that can happen. I try not to sweat the small stuff. Te big stuff is challenging, but not impossible to overcome. Con- fronted with hard moments, I realize I’m probably supposed to be learning something, so I’d better slow down and pay at- tention to detail. It was published in several

papers recently that I was to be the guest speaker for a bunch of ‘men only’, Te ‘Sirs’ group out in the community of Oakmont. A few day later I receive an e- mail from a woman who read

reads Upbeat complaining that I was discriminating against women, and that because I was, I had just lost 50% of my audi- ence. I had to laugh!!! I wrote back to her immediately, say- ing, I’m sorry she felt this way and that I was confused about her comment that I was being discriminatory towards wom- en. I mentioned to her that I got this speaking engagement form the all-women group out at Oakmont Golf Course a time ago, and they liked my speech so much, she recommended I speak to husbands group, Te Sirs...an all men group! She never wrote me back aſter that. It cracked me UP!! I find it funny that aſter 20

years of trying to do the ‘right’ thing by publishing an all posi- tive paper that people will go out of the way to criticize it... It’s ok, however. In twenty
