Send Your Kids Back to School with a Smile

Petaluma, CA. ~ Summer has gone by in the blink of an eye! Parents and kids are busy checking

supplies, hair-

cuts, and finding the perfect outfit for the first day of school. Here are a few health tips to keep the kids smil- ing all year long!

Schedule a Back to School Dental Visit Seeing a dentist twice a year during the school-age years is vital. This is a time of many changes in the mouth, with kids losing baby teeth and getting in their permanent teeth. Tooth decay is still the most common chronic childhood disease and, left untreated, it can impair a child’s ability to eat, speak, sleep and learn. However, stud- ies show more than 60 percent of school-age children do not see a dentist regularly. Simple preventive checkups twice a year can help prevent child- hood tooth decay.

Set a Brush/Floss Schedule for Your Child

Children should brush at least twice a day, and floss daily. Many children skip brushing in

the

morning due to the rush of getting out the door.

Be

sure to not let this happen, even if you need to moni- tor their brush- ing routine.

Set a

scheduled time in the morning and

evening to brush and floss and stick to the schedule. This will help set healthy dental habits for a lifetime.

Make Good Nutrition a Top Priority

Take charge of your child’s health this school year by pack- ing healthy lunches. Be sure that your child eats the recom- mended five daily servings of fruits and vegetables, as well as the recommended daily al- lowance of calcium.
