28 • September 2017 • UPBEAT TIMES, INC. Golf Coach 101: No Shortcuts to Perfection

Santa Rosa, CA. ~ Ben Hogan was a rare and gifted golfer who left the world a rich legacy. His famous quotes are nothing to sneeze at. The following quote I believe is worthy of our atten- tion. “There are no shortcuts in the quest for perfection.” And if what he says is true

,than hard work and mindful practice must be in large part the recipe for success that we are all looking for in the king- dom of golf. Triumph over laziness and

mediocrity comes from a sense of commitment and devotion to a higher power. The vision may seem distant but we bring it out of the abstract and into the now when we decide to actually practice our craft. The alche- mists of old were interested in turning lead into gold but the way to that gold was no walk in the park. Rather it involved a descent into the darkness of the

unknown before any kind of as- cent could be attempted. If we can learn to embrace our pain and suffering that is the first step towards maturity and wis- dom. The bogeys will not kill us if we choose not to let them. The choice is always there and even if we don’t know the break of a putt, we must pick a line and trust our gut. A young King Arthur felt the spirit of greatness calling to him. As a young adolescent he pulled the sword Ex-caliber out from the sacred stone. That is the muse of excellence or per- fection that calls to each of us; be we golfers or archers. The target remains clear. To con- quer our demons and perfect our craft one shot at a time, one breath at a time, one day at a time. As Ben Hogan said there are no shortcuts to perfection so we must be willing to find our guides and saddle up for

the long journey. A great philosopher once said, “Unless a seed falls into the earth and dies it shall not bear fruit.” What part of us as golf- ers needs to die and be reborn into something greater? Each one of us knows in our hearts what that piece is. Getting real and facing both the shadow and light within us is a good place to start. Nothing changes just because we wish it. We actu- ally have to do it to make it real. Spending thirty to forty- five minutes a week on our

game is another excellent place to start. If we could only fly to the mountain’s apex...now wouldn’t that be nice! So why not fly like an eagle or falcon to top of the mountain to reclaim our ancestral birthright? Ben Hogan says yes, as he nods and smiles, “What say you?”
