Treasure hunt ‘We did a “fi nd the words” treasure hunt for our fair. I produced an entry form with the word “Christmas” written vertically. Around the school were nine pictures – each picture started with a letter from one of the letters of “Christmas”. We used: Candy cane, Holly, Reindeer, Igloo, Santa Claus, Tree, Mittens, Advent Calendar and Snowman. The children had to fi nd the pictures and then fi ll out the words. It went down a treat. We picked three winners – one each from Reception, KS1 and KS2 – and gave them each a selection box (from the tombola donations).’ Ruth Presswood, PTA event organiser, Saltford CofE Primary School, Bristol (404 pupils)

Selfi es with Santa ‘We take Polaroid pics at our school fairs – and it’s one of our top moneymaking stalls. At Christmas we transform a gazebo into Santa’s grotto, complete with Father Christmas and his two elves. We charge £2 for a visit to Father Christmas, and this includes a gift – usually a selection box or an advent calendar (as our fair is always held at the end of November). Or for £5 you get to see the big man and get a gift and a picture to take away. We have lots of props – Christmas fancy dress, baubles and tinsel. One of our elves mans the queue to entertain or to advise to come back in a while. We bought our Polaroid camera for just under £100 (it is about nine years old but is still working fi ne). Each picture costs £1 so as long as you charge over £1 it makes a profi t! About half an hour before the event starts we do some trial shots and adjust the lighting so that it’s dark enough to give a sense of cosiness but light enough for the pictures to be clear. About 40 children had the photo with Santa, but this is quite good as we are a very small school.’ Jill Holt, PTA Chair, Clevelands Preparatory School, Bolton (125 pupils)
