Recruiting class reps When it comes to parental engagement, class reps could be your secret weapon – an army of volunteers spreading PTA messages throughout the playground! Securing and maintaining support for
events, communicating the PTA’s goals, and succession planning, are some of the biggest challenges that PTA Chairs face. Reps provide a great communication
channel between the PTA committee and parents, and once they realise how rewarding it can be, they might take on a bigger role! Rather than regarding the PTA as distant
and cliquey, parents will feel closer to the committee, through face-to-face dialogue with someone familiar. Some PTAs invite reps to attend monthly
meetings, while others simply keep them in the loop by sending them minutes of meetings or special requests. Some are elected at an AGM and form part of an extended committee with voting rights, while others take a less formal role. Before starting a recruitment drive, agree how much or how little you want your reps to do and draw up a job description. Let parents know that being a class rep is important and rewarding. Encourage reps to sign up in pairs – tasks seem less daunting with a friend by your side! Make it clear how long they are tied in for (i.e. one academic year) and what they will be expected to do in that time. Typically, class reps: Pass on information from the PTA to other parents in their child’s class and encourage parents to attend events. Attend the AGM and committee meetings (specify how many and dates, if known). Coordinate volunteers to help with fundraising activities. Seek feedback from parents on PTA events or funding requests. If no parents step forward, ask teachers
