Exercise Even though it’s probably the last thing you feel like doing, regular exercise can be good for naturally increasing the serotonin levels in the bottom. This is very important in the treatment of depression since the lower the level of serotonin in the body, the deeper the depression. A normal level of serotonin will promote feelings of happiness, so exercise will allow this to happen naturally. While exercise is important, however, remember that you shouldn’t embark on a full-on fitness campaign when you’re pregnant, so just start off gently with a 30-minute walk, a leisurely swim or some pregnancy yoga.
Massage Swedish massage is the prenatal massage method that’s most usually recommended. That’s because this form of massage addresses many common discomforts that are associated with the skeletal and circulatory changes that are brought on by hormone shifts during pregnancy. As with any form of massage during pregnancy, however, make sure that you source a certified prenatal therapist, since you must see someone who is aware of how to address specific pregnancy needs.
Acupuncture Acupuncture practitioners believe that an energy or ‘life force’ that’s known as Qi (pronounced ‘chee’) in the body. If this Qi can’t flow freely, this can cause illness and depression. With acupuncture, therapists can free up the flow of the Qi and, subsequently, reduce any depression or low feeling. Again, you must find a practitioner who is well acquainted with pregnancy, particularly since there are certain acupuncture points that cannot be used safely during pregnancy.

Meditation There’s no doubt that meditation is becoming increasingly popular for issues linked to mental health and feelings. The current interest in mindfulness is designed to centre the self and encourage a feeling of calm throughout the mind and body. Try and find a meditation class in your local area as this will not only allow you to practise meditation under expert supervision, but will also introduce a social aspect to your life, which may in itself help
you with your low mood and depression. Sometimes just having a chat with others can help. There’s no doubt that antenatal
depression can be distressing – particularly at a time when you should be enjoying the imminent arrival of your precious little baby. But try and keep in mind the fact that the depression will pass over time and that you’ll soon be able to consign it to history!
