Dads boost babies’ brains

If you’re a dad to be and are considering how much paternity leave to take, then read on! New research from Imperial College London, King’s College London and Oxford University has found that fathers who are closely involved with their babies during the first few months may have a positive impact on their child’s cognitive development. Babies – boys or girls – whose fathers played with them the most during their initial months were found to have the highest scores when their mental abilities were tested at the age of two. ‘The clear message for new fathers here,’ says Professor Paul Ramchandani from the Department of Medicine at Imperial College London, ‘is to get stuck in and play with your baby. Even when they’re really young, playing and interacting with them can have a positive effect.’

On the move for better sperm

Problems with low sperm count affect about one in three couples who are finding it difficult to get pregnant. But now researchers, writing in the journal Reproduction, claim that men, who exercise on a regular basis, can see improvements in the quality of their sperm. In tests, men who took part in physical training, had improved sperm quality compared with those who did no exercise. Those who did moderate-intensity continuous training, such as running on a treadmill for 25-30 minutes three to four times a week saw the best improvements after 24 weeks.
