Fake tan: the reality

James Harknett Fake Bake

It's a great idea to put tanning out there for pregnant ladies; I get a lot of expecting women coming to see me all year round. Some years back, there was some negative press regarding fake tan and pregnancy, but it's always good to remind ladies that self tan is the safest way to glow. Within the first trimester, mums to be

are advised to avoid treatments in general, and this is something I advise too. During this period the hormones are changing frequently and I have experienced feedback from some clients that the tan has not activated quite as dark or as even

as

usual. With the body going

through hormonal changes, it's best to wait until you’re three months in to be on the safe side. In pregnancy, it can also be common for pigmentation to appear on the face. The warm golden glow of false tan evens out patching leaving a healthy, natural glow. ‘Can self tan harm me or my baby?’ is

the question I get asked most. The answer is a definite ‘no’. Self-tanning products at home and professional spray tans do not contain chemicals that seep into the bloodstream.

The tanning agent DHA dyes the

proteins on the first layer of the epidermis; in other words, the dead skin cells that we naturally shed over the course of a week. That's why most tans last approximately

one week as our skin renews itself. So a tan is really the same as rubbing in a body moisturiser or lotion. Expectant women always like a quick

fix, a little ‘pick me up’ or something that's going to make them feel and look radiant and glowy. The idea is not to hide your bump, but to accentuate your limbs and frame your assets with a natural golden tan. My top tanning advice

for mums to be is to wax or shave at least 24 hours before tanning. This will give the skin a chance to calm down. You should always exfoliate the day

before your tan and only use a body

moisturiser that is oil free. Never moisturise your

entire body on the day of your tan and only apply

moisturiser to your elbows, knees

and ankles after you have showered. Avoid using deodorant or perfume on the day of your tan too, as these contain chemicals that will affect your tan. When applying tan, always start with

your face. The first step is to exfoliate but don’t apply moisturiser. However, if you can't go without moisturising your face,

always go for a non- perfumed moisturiser without oil, without AHAs and without vitamin A. From experience, I would strongly

recommend staying clear of using a spray on the face, or a mousse. The best tan for face is the new Fake Bake Coconut Serum, which is infused with vital hydrating ingredients and a ready-to- wear guide colour. Always ensure that the tan on the face is

lighter than the body, as, once make up such as bronzing powder and blusher is applied, the face will appear darker. Also, when tanning the face, make sure to blend tan into the hairline. Do this by applying a small amount of tan in a circular motion around the hairline. To maintain tan on the face, stay clear of

using moisturisers with AHAs, vitamin A or retinol, as these creams are formulated to increase cell turnover and your tan will break up and become patchy. I always tell my clients to only ever use

a very simple and gentle face cream for sensitive skin as these don’t contain chemicals.
