Link between asthma and obesity in kids?

Young children with asthma may run

double the risk of becoming obese over a ten-year period than those who don’t

suffer from the condition. Researchers writing in the American Journal of

Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine recommended a healthy diet, plenty of physical exercise and good control of

asthma symptoms as the way to reduce the risk and ensure good overall health for asthmatic children.

Liquorice? Not for all sorts…

Scientists from the University of Helsinki are claiming that women who eat large amounts of liquorice during their pregnancy are running the risk of harming their baby’s development. The researchers found that young people who had been exposed to large amounts of liquorice while they were in the womb, didn’t perform as well in cognitive reasoning tests as others and, in fact, had IQs that were, on average, seven points lower.

Exercise protects kids against depression

With an increasing number of children now affected by mental health issues such as depression, it’s vitally important to do whatever you can to try and prevent your child being affected. A report published in the journal Paediatrics has claimed that ensuring that your child is physically active can lower their risk of developing depression. The researchers found that physically active kids aged between six and eight displayed fewer symptoms of depression than those who did less exercise. Experts generally recommend around one hour of exercise every day for kids aged five and above.

Safety in the sun this summer

The key to maximum protection from the sun is to regularly reapply sun creams, but we all know how difficult it can be to keep kids well protected – particularly when they’re jumping in and out of the sea or the swimming pool! Calypso’s Once a Day range allows for one thorough application and promises sun safety for the rest of the day! Last year, Calypso was tested by Which? While it was the cheapest product tested, Calypso was proven to provide the same – or better – protection than some of the more expensive creams. What more proof could you need?
