What is Feng Shui? The Feng Shui Institute
Feng ShuiFeng shui or “wind and water” is one of the Five Arts of Chinese Metaphysics and essentially the study of how the energy of our environment affects us. Correctly ana- lysing and balancing these energies allows us to retain the positive benefits and remove negative effects.
Unlike modern methods, Traditional Chinese Feng Shui is not based on religion or super- stition. It is an ancient art and natural science that has been tested, developed and prac- ticed for thousands of years in China. In fact, it was not limited to the Chinese and many ancient civilisations used a form of it.
Why we need Feng Shui Modern lifestyles are extreme, often far removed from our natural environment, and as a result, we suffer more stress and anxiety than ever before. We also construct buildings that may be aesthetically pleasing, but have in-built stress that we very easily absorb.
You do not have to “believe” in feng shui for it to have an effect on you. Our environment affects us all and has an impact on our lives when at work or home, either positively or negatively. However, analysing a space and balancing it correctly allows us to alleviate the worry and stress and live a less extreme, happier life.
Applying Feng Shui Many people, having read all about Feng Shui from books or the Internet, are unsure about how to apply it to their own homes or offices. It often seems that the more you read about Feng Shui, the more confusing it becomes and the less likely you are to practise it! This is due in part to the different “schools” or methods of Feng Shui, some of which are simplified versions of the original teachings.
Using Feng Shui Try reading information about the different Types Of Feng Shui, which explains the various systems used by modern feng shui practitioners, as well as the History Of Feng Shui that puts some of the methods in context.
The Basics Of Feng Shui can be found in the basic Feng Shui toolkit or the Five Elements of water, wood, fire, earth and metal, including the “Sheng” or generating cycle and the “Ke” or Controlling Cycle.
Another very important part of feng shui is the principles Yin And Yang, the very essence of Feng Shui, as well as the Eight Trigrams; ancient symbols that hold incredible knowl- edge and wisdom.
Then when you are familiar with these concepts, read about the Feng Shui Bagua, a popular method of feng shui that although useful, is often a source of confusion.
Feng Shui Compass, to determining the compass directions for your home or office, you can use a Western Compass, or the professional feng shui compass or Luo Pan.
