YOU ARE HAVING A LAUGH... by Cathy Towers


Laughter is the best medicine, they say. The latest guest I interviewed on my radio show would agree with that statement (My show is called Speaking Out and past shows can be replayed here: www.mixcloud.com/Cathy_Towers). What interested me about my guest, Emma Boddy, who recently lead some work- shops at Buddhafield Festival, is that she works in mental health – my area – but completely differently to me. Buddhafield is an unusual festival in that it holds a policy of no drinks/drugs and an attitude of support. Hence I was there too as part of the huge healing team, offering Zero Balancing body therapy. Community centre clients struggling with emotional distress and depression asked Emma, who was their support worker, for drama classes to be able to express some of what was locked up inside. They probably thought of the strug- gles and traumas of their lives when they asked for drama classes, and I guess it may have been quite a surprise to find what was really there. Emma is a keen performer of Comedy Improv which is what she provided for them and those cli- ents found themselves releasing laughter, fun and pleasure too. Letting Go of our Scripts


Improv does differ from drama because there is no script. The aim is to be spon- taneous in performance: to be authentically in the moment in response to a given scenario or the simple rules for a characterisation or a game. I think it is a great metaphor for creating mental well-being. Preparing lines from our personal script can keep us in a familiar pattern, with worry and anxiety, for example. When given the guidance to fully just BE, we often end up laughing and playing. Does this sound terrifying to you? It is scary beforehand, yet the act of surrender- ing to whatever comes out liberates the spirit from the self-censorship of depres-
