July sees the start of the Summer Reading Challenge where children are challenged to read six books over the course of the summer holidays. This year’s theme is Animal Agents, where the children are asked to fi nd out who committed a crime in the library!

When you sign up for the challenge you will be given a collector folder, and as you read each book you will collect stickers. Some of them are scratch and sniff! Can you use the stickers to solve the crime? When you have read all six books you will get a medal from the library, and a certifi cate will be sent to school in the autumn term.

We will be running some craft and activity sessions over the summer holidays to tie in with the reading challenge and also some board game sessions aimed at children and their friends and families. Why not come along to play a game with our friendly young volunteers! Lego sessions carry on throughout the summer holidays. GOOD NEIGHBOURS

B R

We are here to help you! Purbeck Good Neighbours is a volunteer group who can help older people over 50 with small or difficult one-off tasks in their home

WHY CALL US? For example:-

5 Walking a dog when you are unwell 5 Change a light bulb 5 Change some batteries 5 Move some furniture 5 Take away some rubbish 5 Read a letter

HELPLINE

All we ask of you is that you give the volunteer a minimum donation of £2 to cover expenses.

Our Aim: Involving volunteers in the Purbeck area to do small one-off tasks for isolated over 50s and the disabled – giving them independence and the ability to remain in their own homes.

To access Purbeck Good Neighbours it takes just a local phone call, which is answered day or night by Medvivo Careline based in Dorchester. It is not an emergency service and we do not do continuing care or heavy work, but Purbeck Good Neighbours aims to contact the client within 48 hours. A small donation of £2 is suggested to help with expenses on completion of the task.

We now have fi ve coordinators and all our volunteers are invited to events and given training, induction packs (plus ID badges) and, of course, coffee and cake! It has been a great way to meet new people and to work with other voluntary organisations who deal with travel, befriending, social activities, etc.

If you are over 50 and have a small task that needs doing, just call us – or why not join our team and become a volunteer:
