The Heathland Code

Have you noticed there are lots of young birds and animals around at the moment?

On the heaths we need to keep our dogs on the paths with us throughout the summer as there are birds nesting on the ground in amongst the vegetation, as well as snoozing lizards and snakes!

Elsewhere there may be young too, so watch out for where you are and be aware. None of us would deliberately destroy the nest of a robin or blue tit, but it is terribly easy to unwittingly destroy the nest of a woodlark or nightjar just by leaving the paths or not keeping our dogs on a lead – quite possibly causing the bird to fail to breed successfully. A failed year is very signifi cant to such rare birds, which can only breed on this rare habitat we are so lucky to have around us.

dog might do the same you could ensure you use a lead in places where there are likely to be deer or try going to other areas where there is less chance of meeting vulnerable wildlife.

If we follow the 'heathland code' in this and other ways, we can protect the special wildlife of the heath and enjoy its beauty to the full. Read the heathland code at:
