034 RSVP / OUT & ABOUT PORCHLIGHT AWARDS
Inspirational people who’ve overcome homelessness became the stars at an awards night hosted by Porchlight. The Porchlight Service User Awards, held at Kent College, Canterbury, featured many remarkable and heartwarming stories. “These awards are a reminder that people who use homelessness services have many talents and much to contribute to the community,” said Porchlight’s Chief Executive Mike Barrett.
Award categories included: Service User Involvement Champion Award; The 100% Award; World of Work Achiever Award; Active Lifestyle Champion Award and Creativity Award. Several other Porchlight residents received certificates for various successes over the past year, including employment qualifications and overcoming personal obstacles on the Jobs, Education and Training programme.
The event was attended by business and community figures who support the work Porchlight does and the awards were
presented by Deputy Lieutenant of Kent Paul Auston, Dean of Canterbury the Very Revd Dr Robert Willis, Honorary President of Porchlight Tim Brett, and several patrons and trustees. • Visit

PRESTIGIOUS AWARD FOR DOVER TEACHER
Hannah Couves, Head of Sixth Form at the Duke of York’s Royal Military School, has been named Science Teacher of the Year for the Dover District in the Kent Teacher of the Year Awards. The physics teacher was praised by pupils and colleagues for her “dynamic and inspirational classes and willingness to help outside of class” and was described as “an outstanding teacher who has allowed aspiring students to exceed their potential through her passion and enthusiasm”. The Kent Teacher of the Year Awards mark the vital contribution that teaching staff make to the community and recognise the expertise and dedication that is the hallmark of an outstanding teacher.
The winners were announced at an awards dinner at the Mercure Great Danes Hotel, Maidstone, an event that also raised funds for literacy and road safety projects in the region.
