Abbey wall remains found on site of new arts building

Canterbury Christ Church University has confirmed that its planned new arts building on the university’s North Holmes Campus will open in September 2018. During an initial examination of the site, Canterbury Archeological Society has discovered footings for St Augustine’s Abbey precinct wall – which will be exposed beneath glass in the new facility. The new centre will support growth in the region’s creative arts and digital industries, and is part of the university’s wider programme of expansion plans. From next year, The Schools of Media, Art and Design, and Music and Performing Arts, both in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, will occupy the building, which will offer a state-of-the-art learning space and technology to provide CCCU students with the best environment for their studies. The design of the arts building celebrates the university’s position within

the city’s World Heritage Site. Through the design features within the building and its external landscaping, the new facility will help to illustrate the unique history of Canterbury’s World Heritage Site to students, staff and visitors. The construction is part of the

university’s wider Estate Master Plan,

which will see the redevelopment of the university’s Canterbury Campus over the next 10 to 15 years. As part of its long- term vision, a new facility for engineering and a heritage centre as part of the university’s transformation of the former prison quarter has also been given a green light for development.

Project set to relieve flooding concerns An innovative scheme to help

reduce the potential for flooding in Folkestone is being delivered by Kent County Council. The project involves a series

of ‘rain gardens’ which are thought to be the first of their kind in the county, that are being installed on Dolphins Road and Wingate Road. The rain gardens – 17 in total – will be installed at the side of the road and water will pass through the planting layer on the top and into a small storage tank below. The project is expected to be completed this summer.
