here are many words to describe this family restaurant, which specialises in dishes from Naples and the Amalfi Coast, but one in


particular stands out: authentic. From our arrival at Pinnochios, the welcoming atmosphere felt genuine. Families, young and old, friends and lovers, all seemed to have come together to enjoy company and conversation – and most importantly, authentic Italian food. We even noted several Italian voices – a defi nite positive sign! Eating with a hard to impress teen, it was my delight to fi nd her pleasure in all on offer. We shared a starter of Bruschetta Napoletana (£4.95) – the fl avours of which still resonate in our taste buds. We quickly relaxed (myself possibly helped by a glass of rich Italian red) but also by the restaurant itself: glass roof,


smart rustic feel, and a subtly sectioned layout all gave the pleasant impression of eating under a pergola. Pristine linen napkins and modern white crockery were an appreciated luxury. Skilful waiters were busy and attentive (it was mid-week and packed) yet also courteous and friendly. For mains, I chose the home-made vegetarian Gnocchi Sorrentina with fi or di latte mozzarella and organic tomato ragu (£10.95): nourishing and well fl avoured, it felt as if someone who truly cared had made it especially for me. Despite a fl irt with the specials board (sword fi sh pan-fried in cherry tomatoes, olives and capers and home-made ravioli stuffed with veal in a cream and mushroom sauce) my teen opted for Insalata Salmone – pan-fried salmon with herbed couscous, broccoli, roasted red peppers, cherry tomatoes and toasted almonds. She adored the dish’s range of tastes – and

discovered the simple pleasure of a good roasted tomato. Our only regret was missing out on the colourful and aromatic pizzas we glimpsed on their way to other tables. Bursting at the seams, we nevertheless


shared a dessert of Torta Amalfi (£7.50) – a home-made cake made with lemons and served with a limoncello cream sauce – which our thoughtful waitress served halved and on separate plates. UNCORKING WINE TOURS


This summer Simpsons Wine Estate is running vineyard tours with food and wine tastings at their vineyards and new winery in Barham. Their tours – on 15th July and 19th August – include a stroll around the vineyards, a visit to the state-of-the-art winery, which opened last October in time for their fi rst harvest, and end with a glass of bubbles and a tasting of wines from the Simpsons’


Domaine de Sainte Rose estate in the Languedoc. Tours run from 10.30am- 1.30pm and cost £22.50 per person. This includes coffee and pastries on arrival and a guided tasting experience of the Sainte Rose wines paired with a local charcuterie and cheese board.

Diary date Enjoy a summer evening to remember when Opera in the Park comes to the Hythe Imperial on 12th August.
