WHITSTABLE SPECIAL 027

WHITSTABLE OYSTER FESTIVAL

• Saturday 22nd-Monday 24th July This year finds the festival in its new home of Tankerton Slopes with a changed programme, but the old traditions of the Landing of the Oysters, Blessing of the Waters and grotter-building still firmly in place. There’s An Oyster Food Fair – and Oyster Eating Challenge – and don’t forget the popular ‘mud tug’ where local groups get down and dirty in a test of strength. This year’s theme is ‘flotsam and jetsam’ – so look out for inspiring art pieces. Monday 24th is Children’s Day, with ‘Whitstabubble’ Picnic and a host of free activities. Let’s Fly a Kite is the traditional end to the day before heading down to the Horsebridge Beach for the festival finale... the much-loved Grotters.

Dates for your diary

The official opening of the festival on 22nd July is the historic Landing of the Oysters which will take place on East Quay Beach followed by a Seafront Procession along the beach to Tankerton Slopes, whilst the much-loved Grotters will offer a family festival finale on Horsebridge Beach on Monday 24th. From 17th July–Thursday 20th and Saturday 22nd children from across the

town are invited to the Horsebridge Centre alongside Total Pap to decorate papier mache masks and fish for The Seafront Procession from the Landing of the Oysters to the Oyster Food Fair on Tankerton Slopes on Saturday 22nd. • For more information, visit www.whitstableoysterfestival.co.uk
