Courthouse Chaos!

‘Guilty’ or ‘Not Guilty’ – that power was in the hands of Primary 5/6 on Wednesday 7th June at Stirling Sheriff Court. We were lucky to take part in a Mini Trial but even luckier that we got to go to the court to conduct it properly!

The man accused in our case was called Tony Bowrie (played by Simeon) who was accused of malicious mischief and throwing a brick through old man Robert Wiley’s window (played by Jade). Our prosecution lawyers, Theo and Molly, had to question the witnesses and put forward a case so that the Jury would find Tony guilty. Our defence lawyers, Logan and Ailis, had to question the witnesses and put forward a case that he was not guilty. After listening to all the witnesses and the case summaries at the end, the jury left to decide if Tony was guilty or not. Much to everyone’s surprise, they returned with a unanimous decision that Tony was not guilty and a free man!

We worked in class on the run up to the trial with Ms. Thomson, an advocate lawyer. We learned how a court was set up, the different roles and jobs that you could have in law and how to use open ended questions properly. We also had to make sure that we spoke loudly and clearly.

It was lots of fun and we all had a brilliant night. This started as part of our ‘Inspire-Aspire’ topic work and there are definitely a few of us who would maybe love to be a lawyer one day – or a judge! We also got to visit the cells in the court and see the questioning rooms. We really wanted the teachers to lock us in, but amazingly, they didn’t!

We had such a fun time and would like to say a big thank you to Ms. Thomson for organising it all and coming in to work with us.
