Goodbye to Mrs Watt!
On Friday 19th May, our school admin assistant, Mrs Claire Watt, retired from her post at Newton Primary School. Mrs Watt worked with us at Newton for 13 years and is well known to many of our families, past and present. Children, staff and parents wished Mrs Watt farewell in an end of day assembly where she was entertained by our P.7 pupils with renditions of two favourite songs! We wish Mrs Watt, and Mr Alan Watt, who retired the same day, a relaxing and happy retirement. Staff, parents and pupils look forward to seeing Mrs Watt in and around the Dunblane Community.

P.7 Track & Field Success This year’s Track and Field event was a huge success for our P.7 team! Jack Stanger, Ben Jackson, Bruce McQuaid, Jamie McQuaid, Logan Hastie, Libby Currie, Ruby Duke, Sophie Schofield, Sophie Clementson and Issy Carruthers took part in the annual event organised by Active Stirling, on Wednesday 31st May, at Stirling University. Josh Shepherd and Rowan Niven, team reserves, trained with the team and supported on the day. Children competed in trials organised by Mrs Coombs (class teacher) and Mrs Stanger (Athletics Club Coach and parent) prior to the event and were allocated to one of six Track and Field events; 600m, 150m, 80m, Long Jump, Javelin or Shot Putt. Each member of the team also participated in the Team Relay Event. We were absolutely delighted with the positive attitudes, commitment and outstanding team work that the children demonstrated throughout their training and the event on the day. Across the events the team achieved outstanding placing on the scoreboards, achieving many individual medals, as well as scooping 1st place and a gold medal, for the Boys Relay Event. The team’s outstanding performance and effort culminated in them being recognised as the ‘Track and Field Champions 2017’. Thank you to Mrs Coombs, Mrs McLachlan and Mrs Stanger for supporting training for the event and also to Alison Grey and her team at Active Stirling for organising another fantastic event!

Shared Learning Context This term P1 and P2 have all been working together on a shared context – Environments. P1G have been learning about ‘Polar Regions’, P1H have been learning about ‘Wonderful Woodlands’, P1/2R have been learning about ‘Remarkable Rainforests’ and P2F have been learning about ‘Wonderful Water’. Throughout this context we have enjoyed learning lots of facts about the animals that live in the four different environments. On Wednesday 24th May we all enjoyed a fantastic trip to Blairdrummond Safari Park to celebrate their learning. ‘You shouldn’t give milk to hedgehogs as it gives them an upset tummy.’ ‘Polar bears have black skin and translucent fur.’ ‘Toucans have small wings that do not allow them to fly very far so they hop around the branches in the rainforest.’ ‘The longest blue whale ever recorded was 33m long.’
