Hibbert also added that today, many medically fragile students are being transported. Hibbert stressed that although some districts don’t share that information, it is important that the driver and aides know the IEPs and medical issues. “It is also helpful if the drivers talk about their expectations of how students should behave with their students, as part of the regular evacu- ation drills,” Hibbert said. “Discuss what would happen in the event of an accident, using age appropriate language. Tell the children that the police, firefighters and ambulances will come. Tese people will get on the bus to help. Tere will be lights, sirens and people in uniforms.” When a frantic parent arrives at the accident scene and asks, “Where is my child?” having procedures to answer that question and keep track of students is vitally important. Keeping track of students at an accident scene can be confusing if some students are released to a parent without medical treatment. Be aware that some students may not have a parent arrive on the scene, and other students may have been transported to several different hospitals by ambulance. Hibbert advised that maintaining up-to-date seating charts is important, since part of the procedure for releasing children is that the driver goes seat-by-seat to note
