the Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania. Its implementation will rely on the availability of networks and their capacity in the future, Murphy estimated. Murphy said she believes the economies of newer wireless

networks that are being introduced (4G and 5G), will make pushing valuable data, such as location in real time, workable. Tat is an easily adoptable technology for schools, and it will help alleviate parental concern. “Often districts can find reimbursements from fleet mileage

from the state, which is even easier with automated report- ing from a robust data tracking system,” she added, noting that SafeTransport charges by the service, rather than the device. “Implementation costs are handled by the schools, (which) can deploy quickly and widely. Tey keep their per device costs low through the availability of Particle tools and technology.”

THE ROUTE AHEAD School buses throughout the U.S. and Canada make about 8 billion student trips from home, school and back each year. Over half of the U.S. K-12 student population is transported by a school bus. If some fraction of those students used their time on the bus to study pronouns, complete math homework and read their social studies assignment, what could be the outcome? Do the math and you’ll likely conclude that it could make a

great impact on the students. Tat may be why Senators Tom Udall (D-N.M.) and Cory

Gardner (R-Colo.) introduced a bipartisan bill in May 2018 to direct the FCC to make school bus Wi-Fi eligible under the federal E-Rate program. Te bill would aid students who don’t have broadband access at home, to use the school bus as an internet site, in order to help complete their homework. Add to this, transportation managers and drivers who work with aging fleets, shallow budgets, and an omni-present concern for student safety and well-being. Tey stand to benefit from collision avoidance, enhanced GPS, remote engine diagnostics, camera surveillance, driver communications, and many other capabilities that would be made possible by the technologies and their convergence. As 5G becomes available and districts realize the cost-benefit

of investing in new technology, the school bus experience for all schools is positioned to change for the better. But the success of the experience will likely depend on the embrace of school boards and budgets to support and enable such technology, install it on existing and new school buses, and make it available for students. Tose students, like those two young ranch hands who travel two hours each way to school each day, will have a whole new, more productive use of their time. So will the many administra- tors and workers who enable their safety and transport. ●
