98 Demand for modern 20th century artists
Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood have seen a rise in the demand for modern 20th century artists in recent auctions, a trend that appears to be continuing. Though to those who prefer the more traditional style of 18th & 19th century artists these works appear to be naive or ‘childlike’, their importance as records of society in the early 20th century are equally as significant when you learn more about the artist and their upbringing. Helen Layfield Bradley MBe (20 november 1900-19 July 1979) was an english artist born in Lees, Lancashire, england. Her paintings, mostly in oils, typically depict life in Lancashire in the edwardian era from her own experiences. she began to paint when she was in her sixties, meeting
the painter L.s. Lowry who encouraged her in the creation of a narrative style based on her own childhood memories. From 1965 she became as popular in the united states as in the united Kingdom. Her works often included members of her own family and people she knew including Miss Carter (always seen wearing pink), her mother, grandmother, maiden aunts, herself and her brother George as well as
their two dogs Gyp and Barney. In 1971 Jonathan Cape published the first of four books And Miss Carter Wore Pink, which was an instant success. editions were then published in German, French, Dutch and Japanese and a special edition produced for the us. The series, illustrated with Bradley’s naïve paintings, topped the bestseller lists in the early 1970s. she died on 19 July 1979 shortly before
‘Going Home from Gt. Aunt Janes’
she was due to be honoured with an MBe. Her works are increasingly sought after and this is reflected in the current values, such as £10,000-£15,000 for a smaller work such as ‘Going Home from Gt. Aunt Janes’ to £30,000- £50,000 for larger pieces like ‘Piccadilly, Manchester 1915’. As we march onwards to the middle of the second decade of the 21st century, 20th century artists will continue to grow in demand and reputation. For further details please call 01392 413100
