Hello and welcome to Dart Harbour and Navigation Authority’s latest news, keeping residents and harbour users up to date.

REGATTA Dartmouth Royal Regatta is

probably the busiest week of the year on the water with a large number of vessels both underway and moored in the harbour and Dart Harbour staff will be on hand to help promote a safe and enjoyable event. Visitors and competitors will

appreciate that the safety of harbour users is of utmost importance and ask for everyone’s support. Harbour users not involved in

the Regatta are politely reminded to keep clear of the organised waterborne events and exercise particular caution when underway in the area during this period. some of the events such as the firework displays will require us to close certain parts of the harbour for short periods of time so we can maximise safety. Local notices to Mariners will be

available so please do take heed of these areas and timings so to avoid any potential delays or disruption. Don’t forget to use the harbour with caution – always wear your kill cord and remember that lifejackets are useless unless worn. The International Regulations for Prevention of Collisions at sea includes use of a torch or white light if you’re using your dinghy at night and should be adhered to at all times. Please also take into account that excessive consumption of alcohol while on the water can be dangerous.

Here are some of the main events taking place within the harbour:

Sailing Events These start on August 20 with junior and senior dinghy racing followed by a large number of racing yachts arriving, having taken part in the annual Passage Race from Brixham on August 24. Yacht and keelboat racing will take place from August 25 to August 28. These sailing events will involve a high volume of activity in and near the harbour over this period with hundreds of boats competing in approximately 50 races. Dinghy sailing will take place within the harbour at Dittisham and Kingswear and yacht and day boat racing in the mouth of the river as well as further out to sea.

Rowing Events Rowing events will begin prior to the regatta with practice races taking place from August 15 to August 19 from 6.30pm to 8pm between noss and Warfleet. Heats will take place on August 21 with semi-finals and long distance whaler race finals August 22 and the finals on August 26. West of england A.R.A races will take place on August 25. While safety and support craft will be in attendance, we would still ask mariners to take care and keep a watchful eye open. This year there is also the addition of gig racing taking place on August 27.

Firework Displays As usual there will be two firework displays taking place on August 25 from 9.00pm and August 27 again from 9.00pm. The Regatta

Committee has again decided to hold both displays in the harbour with the fireworks fired from a barge moored off the south embankment, secured as usual by Dart Harbour. An exclusion zone will be in force for both events with no vessels permitted in the area between 8.45pm and the end of the display on the appointed days. Harbour Authority vessels will be on patrol to keep this zone clear.

Air Displays sadly due to changes in regulations there is only one official air display taking place during the regatta. This is the RAF Typhoon that is scheduled to display at 6pm on August 27. An exclusion zone in the main channel between the higher and lower ferries will be in force and no vessels will be permitted in this area from ten minutes before the scheduled start and the end of the display. Again Harbour Authority vessels will be on patrol to keep these zones clear. There are other flypasts of aircraft scheduled including the Red Arrows, however no harbour closures will be necessary for these. Dart Harbour wishes everyone

a safe and fun Regatta 2016.
