MORDRED Sat 17 Sept @ 7.30pm A 6th century Arthurian drama set in Devon and Cornwall, exploring earlier legends, from the point of view of Mordred, King Arthur’s illegitimate son. King Arthur has ruled Dumnonia, after being chosen as the Pendragon. His elder sister, once the Arch-druidess of Dumnonia; Morgan, is banished after the deaths of Arthur’s first wife Anna, and his baby son. Many years later, a young nobleman is found, poisoned, on Dartmoor. He is revealed to be Mordred, illegitimate son of King Arthur…this is their story…This dramatic, drama- packed production, is by the Torbay-based South Devon Players Theatre & Film Company. Contains strong language and violent scenes.

Bellini’s classic bel canto opera is full of wonderful melodies and opportunities for star singing. But it is especially known for Norma’s stunning showpiece aria, ‘Casta diva’. Àlex Ollé of innovative Catalan theatre group La Fura dels Baus directs, bringing a modern edge to this timeless tale of love, rivalry and betrayal, set against a backdrop of war driven by the extremes of a fanatically religious society. Royal Opera Music Director Antonio Pappano conducts this stunning cast, including Joseph Calleja as Norma’s secret lover, Pollione and Sonia Ganassi as the priestess Adalgisa, in a striking new production, which opens the 2016/17 Season. Cymbeline is a ruler of a divided Britain. When Innogen, the only living heir, marries her sweetheart in secret, an enraged Cymbeline banishes him. But a powerful figure behind the throne is plotting to seize power and murder them both. Innogen embarks on a dangerous journey that will reunite Cymbeline with a lost heir and reconcile the young lovers. Melly Still directs Shakespeare’s rarely performed romance.
DARTMOUTH ORCHESTRA CONCERT Wed 21 Sept @ 7.30pm Musical Director Phil Watson A selection of classical music performed by popular local Dartmouth Orchestra. Programme to include: Beethoven - Symphony No 5, one of the best known works of the classical orchestral repertoire. It begins with the famous four-note victory motif on which the whole of the first movement is based. Phil Watson - ‘Blencathra’ World Premier of a new piece by local composer and conductor Phil Watson featuring the orchestra’s talented cello section. Come to hear the beautiful rich sound of a ‘cello ensemble in this orchestral idyll.
