S


itting on the starting line waiting for the klaxon to sound hoping that the wind stands fair for your boat and not the others, the energy


is crackling and you could cut the tension with a knife. There seems to be a type of sailor who thinks that things are not going to happen unless a lot of shouting is done. Frayed tempers are about as useful as a frayed rope when in the thick of the fight. It’s not as if you are trying to win the Battle of Trafalgar or sail home first triumphant in the America’s Cup - you know it’s a local regatta but it means just as much to those sailors that like winning. That is just the people competing but as we know


the Regatta is more than that. It is a way of getting the whole town together to have fun and enjoy each others’ company. so it’s time to get out your Breton stripe sweater and come over all sailor like. The Regatta is here again and each time it is exciting and different despite being the same. We all like familiarity, it is comforting and grounding.


We can put the Regatta in our diaries at the beginning of the year as something to look forward to. But do you find you are annoyed with the traffic and crowds in a way that did not bother you just a few years ago? Have you stopped making the effort to get to all the activities that used to make your heart sing? With the old saying ‘familiarity breeds


contempt’ comes the warning not to take things for granted or to stop seeing them for how wonderful they are. This can apply to all areas of our lives from the drive to work to our body. It is a fact of life that we do the same things over and over again and as the years go on we become immune to, or even bored, by the way we live. spring means bedding plants and plans to

It is all going to catch up with us sooner or later. You may notice that the jolly sweater is a bit tighter each year. These tiny increments of weight gain all add up and then suddenly you are moaning about middle aged spread when in fact it is middle years’ spread, spread out over a decade! If you are taking the most basic


functions of your body for granted you may find that you are slowing down faster than nature intended and cannot get up from a chair so easily, that the second glass of wine gives you a headache,


that you find it harder to thread a needle and the final insult you have to get up several times a night to visit the loo! Your body is going to age but you can keep it going
