RDYC 150 Years Celebrations

alike. 36 yachts participated of which five were French but local Club boats dominated the podium.

My previous Local Government experience was as the Town Clerk for Totnes; a position I held for over 15 years. I left the Town Clerk’s job in 2011 and over the last 5 years I have looked back to realise how enjoyable and interesting the clerk’s position can be. Hence my return! Prior to becoming a Town Clerk I spent 17 years in Lloyds Bank which included 5 years at Dartmouth from 1975 to 1981 (I never could count) and various other branches in the south West. My first house when I married was in Totnes and I was delighted to return to the town when I became the Manager of the Bradford and Bingley Building society.

I have a family connection with “that place” across the river as my mother is a Dartmothian and I spent many happy days during my childhood in the town.

I am married with 3 grown up sons and my wife works for the District Council. I also support Plymouth Argyle!” We welcome David to our ranks very warmly and wish him well in his new job.

The Gods of Yacht Clubs must be smiling on the Royal Dart Yacht Club in its 150th year as they have provided great winds for their Classics Regatta and the finest evening of the year for the Grand Gala.

150th celebrations got un- derway with the Club terrace buzzing as over 150 members gathered for the Anniversary Commodore’s Cocktail Party and a letter of congratulation was read out from the club’s Admiral, the Duke of edinburgh. A week of activities then followed includ- ing a Club sail past and salute taken by President Mike Moody, before a fleet of 22 Club boats crossed the channel on a 150th Anniversary cruise to st Peter Port. over 60 members enjoyed the pontoon party on arrival – nearly sinking it.

The Club’s Dartmouth Classic Weekend delivered some condi- tions that tested boat and crew

The inaugural prestigious new team racing competi- tion, conceived by the Club, between south Devon Yacht Clubs for the savills Commo- dore’s Challenge Cup was contested in start Bay on the 23rd July by nine teams, each with three boats. The Yacht Club’s competing were the Royal Dart, Royal Torbay, Teign Corin- thian, salcombe, Yealm and Royal Western who lifted the trophy and will host the event in Plymouth next year.

There is still more to come though as the club host a great spectacle for the Dart, the start of the small ships Race on the 20-22nd August. The Club has also sponsored 11 local young people, who had never sailed before, to take part on historic Brixham Trawler ‘Provident’.
