Linking ideas together does not have to involve words. For example, you might be interested to learn where parents and carers in a beginner ESOL group you are working with spend time with their children, so you can compare their daily practices with the content of the curriculum you are teaching. Rather than ask people to write or say where they spend their time, they could draw the places they go on a spider diagram.

Online curation tools are very useful when doing desk research (or, for that matter, when you are researching on a phone, tablet or out and about on a laptop). You can use tools such as Scoop-it and Delicious to gather useful links from across the internet and, if you wish, share these links with others. Another useful online web application, part curation tool and part spider diagram is Pearltrees. As well as storing hyperlinks, Pearltrees allows you to add documents, notes and links to other Pearltrees, all of which are organised into spider diagrams. You can see an example of a Pearltree on Action Research below:

The Pearltree you access online will look a little different to the picture opposite. This is because it is dynamic; it can be added to and amended over time. This dynamism can be useful for gathering research resources because you can change your mind about what will or will not be relevant. You can share Pearltrees with other people and ‘team up’ to create shared Pearltrees. In this way, Pearltrees also supports collaborative research.
