7 Online texts

So much of what we ‘write’ or ‘design’ in the modern world will start off or become an online text. This has implications for the ways that we read and write. Consider, for example, the difference between a paper-based and an online newspaper. The paper based version is designed to be scanned as a full text (sections are chosen by flicking the pages and reading headlines), whereas an online newspaper may rely on hyperlinks from a front page to help readers navigate through its pages.

Wikis

One genre of text that grew directly from online reading approaches was the wiki.

Quite aptly, a good definition of this text type can be found at the most famous wiki of all ‘Wikipedia’ (see http:// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki):

If you would like to collaborate with co-researchers or research participants to create a wiki as

part of your action research project, Wikispaces is a example of free wiki software and hosting, specifically designed for educational purposes.
