SPONSORS OF REGIONAL FOCUS
GARDLINE AND PETANS A UNIQUE PARTNERSHIP
The rapid growth of the offshore wind sector has, without doubt, placed demands on the supply chain requiring flexibility from suppliers.
COLLABORATION
Two companies, Gardline and Petans, have collaborated in an innovative approach to meet an emerging gap in the market. Gardline, with 40 years of offshore operations experience, has provided services to the offshore wind sector since 2001. Services include the transfer of technicians and other personnel to wind farm sites. However, the company’s vessel crews have become increasingly concerned about technicians’ preparation for vessel to turbine transfers.
SKILLS GAP AND EXPERIENCE Technicians are in short supply meaning that while new entrants to the market may have excellent electrical/mechanical qualifications; their experience in working offshore can be very limited.
In response Gardline and Petans joined forces to develop and deliver a unique training course to teach technicians and other personnel how to transfer between vessel and turbine safely and deal with emergencies at sea.
Both companies have made contributions to the project. Gardline has installed a specialist facility on its site at East Coast Training Services (ECTS) based at Trinity Quay in Great Yarmouth.
NEW FACILITIES
The new facilities include a 14 tonne, 3.5m diameter turbine base on the quayside and a school vessel of a class used in turbine transfers. Delegates practice transfers safely under instruction in Great Yarmouth harbour as well as gaining essential and realistic insights into travel by sea, Man Overboard rescues and Defibrillation training.
TRAINING COURSE DEVELOPMENT The course has been developed by Petans instructors. Petans has been providing professional safety training services to the offshore industry for over 35 years and is both OPITO and RenewableUK accredited.
Petans trainers, who are also MCA accredited, have designed the course to ensure that it meets current best practice and MCA guidelines.
WORKING TOGETHER
The course shows how two independent organisations can work together bringing specialist knowledge, experience and capacity to provide innovative solutions in response to emerging demands from the offshore wind sector.

PETANS PROFESSIONAL SAFETY TRAINING
For nearly 40 years Petans has been the benchmark for professional safety and survival training offshore UK and worldwide.
ACCREDITED TRAINING
They continue that ethos today. Petans still provide offshore OPITO accredited training from the base in the South Eastern UK but increasingly are accrediting courses and training for the wider energy based market.

REGISTERED CHARITY
As a Registered Charity (290458) they offer the best costs in training to Marine personnel for the required basic MCA standards, as well as basic and advanced maritime firefighting.
OFFSHORE FOCUS
This marine and offshore focus brings them into the renewables industry where they provide marine installation and offshore turbine transfer training.
During 2011 they hope to add further to these collaborations with working at heights and rope access training using Petans newly commissioned tower training facility, and to strengthen the renewables portfolio with training in solar fitting and installations.
