SPONSORS OF REGIONAL FOCUS THE TOWN OF GREAT YARMOUTH
Situated between the harsh North Sea and the picturesque Broads National Park is the town of Great Yarmouth. With this location, it is no wonder the town boasts world-class knowledge of the offshore industry, shipbuilding and repair expertise, a 24-hour accessible port with recently operational deep-water outer harbour, considerable diving, ROV and surveying experience and a full range of expertise in the offshore wind industry.
THE PORT
The Port of Great Yarmouth has operated for nearly 1000 years on the European stage serving fishing, shipbuilding, timber, agriculture and offshore industries. Its central 24/7 facilities have served gas platforms in the Southern North Sea (SNS) for more than 45 years. Through this, a strong, highly skilled marine supply chain of some 400 companies has developed which are innovative, adaptable and in demand across the world.
WIND ENERGY EXPERIENCE Things have come a long way in Great Yarmouth since the 60MW Scroby Sands Round 1 wind farm project was commissioned in 2004 as one of the UK’s first commercial offshore wind farms. Project-managed by Great Yarmouth- based ODE, the £75million project generates enough energy to supply over 30,000 homes. ODE were pioneering in their approach at turning their oil and gas hands to wind and continue to apply their ‘can do’ approach, typical of Great Yarmouth businesses to more recent projects such as Robin Rigg and Ormonde. The 30 2MW Vestas turbines are still operated and maintained by E.ON in Great Yarmouth today, as the port and companies in the town continue to work and develop their range of expertise on Round 2 and 3 projects.
GREAT YARMOUTH BASED COMPANIES
Surveying capabilities is one of the town’s greatest assets and Gardline Marine Sciences, hydrographic surveyors Maritech Consultants and Fugro Survey provide marine geoscience services. Together these companies have provided a range of surveying services to the majority of the UK’s Round 2 and 3 offshore wind farms.
The deep-water outer harbour is currently being used by MT Hojgaard as a base to facilitate the installation of foundations at the Lincs offshore wind farm and A2Sea for the reloading base for the installation of topsides on the Sheringham Shoal offshore wind farm.

coast. This diversification has seen an investment of over £250,000 by CLS to train 50 technicians. CLS brought their considerable knowledge, experience and first class safety record from the oil and gas industry to the project.
Another company applying traditional offshore knowledge to the burgeoning wind industry is Seajacks. One of their two self-propelled jack-up vessels; originally designed to meet the needs of the offshore oil and gas industry is currently under contract to Fluor. Seajacks Leviathan is installing wind turbines for the Greater Gabbard wind farm whilst its sister vessel, Seajacks Kraken is working on Walney 1 and Walney 2 wind farms.
LONG TERM COMMITMENT Businesses in the area are also mindful of the longevity of offshore wind projects and are gearing themselves up for service, repairs and supplies for operations and maintenance after turbine warranties.
Great Yarmouth Borough Council has plotted the remarkable pool of expertise, skills and services of local companies and evidenced that all aspects of wind farm construction, installation, operation and maintenance can be completed by businesses in the Great Yarmouth and surrounding area. Great Yarmouth offers investors the warmest welcome
and a professional team centered at the Borough Council who is truly committed to bring together all relevant organisations to facilitate the growth of companies in the town. “The energy sector has played a central role in the life of the town for decades and the Council and partners have responded by doing everything they can to provide a supportive environment” says Richard Packham, Managing Director for Great Yarmouth Borough Council. “Essentially, we know how to deal with, respond to and support the energy sector. We engage with all the key players at the highest level. We would like to think that the success of the sector is due in no small part to this approach.”
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT Land adjacent to the port and just inland at Beacon on the A12 to Lowestoft is being developed to meet the needs of investors and expansion plans of current businesses. On both sites, premises can be developed freehold or leasehold and will meet the needs of modern occupiers.
Great Yarmouth is at the forefront of installation and long term operations and maintenance of the new era of large scale offshore wind farms around our coastline.
