SPONSORS OF REGIONAL FOCUS EAST ANGLIA LEADS THE WAY
The recent RenewableUK’s Offshore Wind Energy Conference, held in Liverpool, cemented East Anglia’s position as the ringleader for wind energy solutions in the UK. Exhibitors and attendees from East Anglia dominated the show, demonstrating the area’s pivotal role in the development of offshore wind power.
East Anglia companies exhibiting at the event included ABP, Consense, CWind, Dawson Energy, Gardline Marine Sciences, Global Marine Systems, E-Tech Group, JDR Cable Systems, K2 Management, Pegasus Energy, Red7Marine, R People, Seajacks with many more regional businesses visiting the show.
ORBISENERGY
Exhibiting at the event and based in East Anglia, is home to companies specialising in offshore renewable energy, helping to bring businesses together to benefit the renewables industry through cultivating close working relationships.
Johnathan Reynolds, Business Development at OrbisEnergy, says: “it was astounding how many of the delegates were from East Anglian businesses – both exhibiting and attending. This strong regional presence is a great testament to how East Anglia is leading the way in the offshore energy sector.”
Stuart Thornton, Programme Manager at EEEGR, said: “with so many of our member businesses demonstrating their capability in the offshore wind sector, and many more looking to diversify their skills and expertise, we can rightly say that the region is a world leading hub for the energy sector.”
TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION CENTRES
In support of the offshore wind sector’s growth, the Technology Strategy Board (which stimulates technology-enabled innovation in sectors which offer the greatest scope for boosting UK growth and productivity) is in the process of creating a network of Technology Innovation Centres (TIC). These centres will specialise in wind, wave and tidal technology in order to further progress the technology for sustainable renewable energy solutions. OrbisEnergy, in conjunction with a variety of Universities and specialist Research Institutes, is developing a bid for the development of a TIC in East Anglia.
EAST OF ENGLAND EXPERIENCE
The East of England, known for its tourism and fishing heritage, has now become a place predominantly on the world stage for renewable energy. With Sheringham Shoal, Scroby, Gunfleet Sands and Greater Gabbard to its credit the area will gear up again soon for the forthcoming East Anglian Array in 2013.
SERVICING EXPERIENCE Offshore serviceable towns of Lowestoft and Gt Yarmouth have always had excellent engineering, fabrication and bespoke steel work facilities, but rising to the ‘green’ growth industry ahead many business owners and investors have had the tenacity to expand upon their services and product portfolio.
This diversification allows those forward planners to reap the rewards as the renewables industry gains further project approvals.
FUTURE POTENTIAL AND INFRASTRUCTURE Further cementing the future growth potential has seen investment in local college engineering facilities and offshore training so that the area can react to the need to increase the highly skilled workforce. Business hubs, Beacon Innovation Centre at Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft’s Orbis Energy Centre have brought businesses in

this sector together, offering assistance and encouraging enterprise through its network of contacts and professionals.
COMPANIES LARGE AND SMALL SMEs to global giants have a presence in the area, working together from the initial planning and survey through to testing and commissioning, requiring a vast scope in knowledge and capabilities, but all available in the East of England.
During this year R People has attracted new clients based in the East of England, furthering their need to be proactive. The Orbis Centre in Lowestoft was perfect for their logistical plans.
Being a service provider to a number of wind farm projects, UK and International, they found that they were working alongside other companies from the region, so it appears that no matter if it’s happening here or if it’s happening there it’s the skills and services of the East of England that helps make it happen.

Johnathan says: “this bid is great news for investors, as the potential development of a Technology Innovation Centre in East Anglia will really help strengthen the area’s capability for innovation in renewable energy, making the most of the resources already here and adding further assets to the industry.”
OrbisEnergy’s commitment to leading progress in the sector is further illustrated through their support of the recent report Making green growth real: UK offshore wind supply chain (which was co-authored by OrbisEnergy and the Royal Academy of Engineering). The report highlights the need for the UK to create a supply chain in order to reap the economic benefits of the wind energy revolution.
