SPONSORS OF REGIONAL FOCUS THE IMPERIAL HOTEL – GREAT YARMOUTH WORKING AWAY FROM HOME

How often have you dreaded being away from home for long periods of time, missing all the home comforts which we take for granted until they are not available?

I have personal experience of this in professions which have pulled me all over the country, and beyond, to conferences, training courses and events necessary to progress my professional career.

My experience is however nowhere near that of our technicians who live offshore for the vast majority of their working life away from home but I can understand what it may be like from what I have experienced.

INDUSTRY MEETING PLACE Where we stay is key to being as happy as you can be when working away and the Imperial Hotel in Great Yarmouth serves that need very well. The hotel has become one of the places where people in our industry meet up and has an atmosphere of friendliness from both the proprietors, Aileen and Nick Mobbs, through to the staff who are attentive and professional but after just a few visits become more that just staff but friends.

STANDARDS

Aileen and Nick have progressed the hotel to the exacting standards experienced today and is very much more than a seaside 4 star hotel.

DINING

The restaurant is critically acclaimed in the area and table booking is recommended because of its popularity – the accents in the bar and restaurant on an evening testify to the support which exists locally.

A new addition to the hotel is a purpose built, well designed and thought out, terrace which allows outside dining

DEVELOPMENT AT LOWESTOFT COLLEGE

Lowestoft College is one of the UK’s leading maritime and offshore safety training centres serving the offshore wind, oil & gas and related marine logistics and shipping sectors. It is committed to the delivery of first class training to seafarers and offshore personnel worldwide.

2011 has been an exciting year for the College with a number of new courses and developments associated with the energy sector and in particular, offshore wind.

WIND TURBINE TRAINING TOWER

In August, construction started on a new 18 metre high wind turbine training tower. A partnership with the National Wind Farm Training Centre (NWFTC) has secured this development and will see the introduction from September 2011 of RenewableUK and turbine manufacturer approved Working and Rescue from Height training,

Enclosed Space Working and Advanced Rescue courses. This new suite of courses will combine with the College’s related training in First Aid, Marine Safety, Marine Transfer and Electrical Awareness for Wind Turbines to enable offshore wind workers and companies the opportunity to undertake the key safety training requirements in one place in one block.

£600,000 WORKSHOP INVESTMENT

In another exciting development, the College’s thriving Engineering Department which provides Apprenticeships, full time and part time courses up to degree level has invested £600,000 in a new engineering workshop. New equipment representing the latest technologies found

in industry will be commissioned over the summer in time for the new academic year.

AREA’S INCREASED ACTIVITY

Meanwhile, the College’s Maritime & Offshore centre’s core business of MCA, OPITO and Nautical Institute approved training is flourishing in part due to the increase in offshore wind related marine activity of the Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex coastlines.

throughout the day in comfort, with a selection of environments ranging from open air to total enclosure, with heating, sometimes necessary on the Norfolk coast.

INDUSTRY SUPPORT

Many companies and organisations within the industry use the hotel’s considerable facilities to hold conferences, training courses and events as well as its comfortable en-suite accommodation so it is difficult not to bump into someone you know.

This in our view is its major asset – it is recognised as a meeting place for colleagues to enjoy a chat in a comfortable atmosphere, which takes away some of the pain from having to work away from home.
