SIEMENS R & D CENTRES OF COMPETENCE MANCHESTER 2011
Siemens, the leading provider of wind power technology, grid connections and turbine service and maintenance announced last year that it is to make further investment in its Global Centre of Competence for High Voltage Grid Connections in Manchester.
Job creation This will create up to 170 new high technology jobs (adding to the c.100 already in the Centre) designing, and building HVDC transmission systems for the UK and North West Europe.
These systems are used to connect countries' power networks together and to bring power ashore from offshore wind farms. Siemens is already the UK market leader for offshore wind power and AC grid connections.
Investment in the UK This latest investment represents the ongoing commitment by Siemens to the UK and to North West England. The emulation centre will be the first of its kind outside Germany.
The Centre of Competence is part of Siemens strong wind power R & D portfolio in the UK, which also includes Centres of Competence at Keele and Sheffield Universities for leading edge wind power converter technology.
These centres provide many interesting high technology roles in R & D and engineering.
