• The Crown Estate – Roy Evans (Head of Development and Asset Management) covered what The Crown Estate is responsible for and the considerable progress, which has been made in the past 4 years. In particular the last 12 months, which places theUK as the largest producer of offshore renewable energy. He further expanded on projects, both under construction and planned for the future
• DECC (Department of Energy and Climate Change) – Richard Hall (Supply Chain Manager, Offshore Wind) concentrated on the policy objectives of renewable energy and his department’s responsibility, within that structure, for the offshore wind energy industry
BREAK-OUT SESSIONS There were 3 sessions in the afternoon, with particular emphasis on the interaction between companies and delegates, to ensure there was sufficient information and knowledge available to take away from the event.

SUMMARY According to many delegates who attended the day, it was a very worthwhile and informative event with a great mix of presentation, networking opportunities and interactive sessions. This ensured those who did attend were not disappointed, but more importantly these days... did not waste their time.
• SMartWind – Andy Kinsella (Executive Director and CEO Offshore, Mainstream Renewable Power) commented that wind energy is a very large and pioneering industry and without the creativity and innovation in the people involved we would not be able to move forward. If that message could be understood on the day then that would be a major achievement. Andy also played a video of the reasoning behind the proposed Supergrid and its importance in the future production of energy in the UK and Europe (Ed’s note – a major feature on Supergrids and Superclusters is planned for a forthcoming issue)
• Alstom Power – Edward Rae (Vice President Wind Global Supply Chain) explained the skills that are required in the wind energy industry and the need to work with other industries to learn and ensure sufficient and sustainable high standards
• Siemens T&D – Stephen Black (Procurement Manager) also covered the requirements and expectations of Siemens regarding the opportunities and challenges of becoming a supplier in the industry
As many of these regional events were locally organised on behalf of The Crown Estate by the RDAs (Regional Development Associations), who are being phased out because of government cut backs, it was refreshing to experience such a well organised event and such a positive atmosphere.
