RENEWING THE HUMBER EVENT


This 2 day event, organised by Renewable Network was held at Hull University on day 1 and Hull City Hall on day 2.


Day 1 – Business conference and exhibition The conference was the main focus, where almost 200 delegates attended this very informative event.


The 33 exhibitors must have been very pleased at how busy the day turned out to be with ample time given, between presentation sessions, to network and visit stands.


Break-out sessions covered: • Communication and marketing • Innovation • Parts and logistics • International business development • Supply chain development


Conference speakers The conference was opened and chaired throughout the day by Richard Duxbury, Deputy Managing Director at Mail News and Media.


Emphasising the importance of the event in the area the opening address was presented by Councillor Carl Minns, Leader of Hull City Council, who introiduced the day and the vast experience and knowledge of the assembled speakers:


• Sam Pick – Business Development Manager at Renewables Network – an overview of Renewables Network and how they support the renewable energy sector in the Yorkshire and Humber region


• Tim Blackmore – Key Account Manager at Vestas – the history of Vestas and the UK market within on and offshore wind including the processes and timescales for winning business with Vestas


• Tim Handley – Humber Gateway Project Developer with E.ON – the status of the Humber Gateway Offshore Windfarm


• Tim Barraclough – Business Development Manager from Enterprise Europe Yorkshire – European / UK Business Partnerships and winning business overseas


• Professor Stephanie Haywood – CASS (the Centre of Adaptive Science and Sustainability) within Hull University – a new partnership at the University of Hull to develop renewable energy in the Humber region


• Mark O’Reilly – Director of Business Development at THMA (Team Humber Marine Alliance) – supply chain development opportunities and the importance of working together collaboratively in order to win business


• Gareth Russell – Business Development Manager at ABP (Associated British Ports) – an update on the site developments at ABP including the Green Port of Hull


• Marc Paish – Chief Technical Officer of Pulse Tidal – developments at Pulse Tidal moving from R&D to development and testing followed by production in the tidal power sector


• James Barrett-Miles – Director, Environmental Division of Ernst & Young – the key in utilising and understanding investment opportunities to develop renewable energy which will meet UK Government and European targets


• Andrew Morton – Account Director from Footprint Renewables – the importance of communications and brand in an emerging market


There were also two Q & A Sessions, which proved lively, informative and positive


The programme provided a good balance and included very practical advice from a wide cross section of the renewables sector.


Day 2 – Skills & Careers Public Exhibition


Hull City Hall played venue for this event and was dedicated to businesses involved in the renewable industry to exhibit their organisations skills and careers to the public.


The free-to-the-public exhibition within the Mail News and Media’s ‘Your Future Career’ event attracted 4,500 visitors.


Speakers included HETA (Humberside Engineering Training Association) and Cosalt, who addressed the visitors throughout the day, focusing on skills and career opportunities available in the renewable energy sector.
