DENNIS’S CV


We spoke for some time regarding divers and their work so we decided that we should feature that in a future issue so watch this space!


Finally we caught up with Dennis Henderson, Group Business Development Director of Peel Ports which is the second largest ports group in the UK.


Dennis described the size of the operation...


“Peel Ports consists of a number of strategic gateways, the Port of Liverpool being the largest, and we also own the Manchester Ship Canal, which is environmentally key to moving cargo/containers as far inland as possible before we need road traffic – we can get 30 miles inland!


“We also own the Meadway, Chatham Docks and the Port of Sheerness so we are well placed to serve the needs of the North Sea. We also own Heasham just 50 miles north of Liverpool which is at the moment a RORO port, but we have plans to develop that for operations and maintenance to serve the offshore wind sector.


We also own Clydeport in Scotland which is a group of 4 ports – Glasgow, Greenock, Hunterston and Ardrossan”. Not content with that Peel Ports also own 2 shipping companies – Coastal and VG Freight.


DENNIS’ ROLE


There are individual managers which are specific to each port however Dennis’ role, as his title would suggest, is to drive large scale transformational growth across multiple port sites and in emerging markets. Renewables and specifically wind energy is one of those markets.


Dennis explained that his background has a supply chain theme. He started in the national freight consortium in transport and warehousing, then moved to Hayes and spent 11 years there in the distribution and logistics division, based in Manchester and Milton Keynes. It was while he was there that he became Business Development Director so effectively moved from distribution to Sales and Marketing and eventually ran their retail division.


He then had the opportunity to move to Virgin Retail as Group Supply Chain Director and became the Chief Operating Officer for Virgin Megastores in the UK – a very interesting & rewarding period.


Dennis then moved into the automotive industry as Managing Director of Unipart Automotive for 5 years then joined Peel Ports in February 2010.


YOUR VISION FOR PEEL PORTS?


“Peel Ports are different to most ports groups because I believe its development and expansion ethos gives us an edge, particularly with its new management group (80%of senior management are new to Peel Ports). That brings a different culture than many of the other groups, which may we suggest are fairly traditional – not all, but most.


“We see ourselves growing significantly faster in economic terms, based upon an aggressive approach to emerging markets and a multi layered approach to business development in existing markets, where we are operating at the moment – when the opportunities arise to expand we will take them.” Dennis stated confidently.

MERSEY MARITIME INVOLVEMENT?


Peel Ports are members of Mersey Maritime and are both very focused on the development and opportunities in the renewables business, particularly offshore wind. Across all their ports they are actively playing their part and supporting what Mersey Maritime are trying to do because it is important to them.


THEWIND ENERGY INDUSTRY AND HOWYOU SEE IT?


Dennis enthused “This business sector has got a very long term future – a minimum of 20 years, but more likely to be more than 50 years. We see this as a long term revenue stream with long term contracts for both landlords/tenants to manufacturing plants, but also for installation vessels and operations and maintenance”
