COINTELPRO: J. Edgar Hoover was ap-


pointed as head of the BI (Bureau of Investigation) and later became head of hte FBI. In the early 1900s. one of his first projects was to undermine and destroy the Marcus Garvey Movement. He used propaganda to demean Garvey and sent agents to in- filtrate and sabotage his movement. One of Hoovers biggest excuses for destroy- ing Garvey was because his own people, such as WEB Dubois disapproved of him. After Garvey’s Steams ships were sabo- taged and his organization was thoroghly inflitrated, Garvey was arrested for mail fraud and later deported. Hoover’s de- struction of the Garvey movement was an overwhelming success. Garvey’s al- located land in Liberia was given to Fire- stone, the largest tire manufacturer in the world. In 1955, Blacks began civil unrest after


the murder of Emit Till, which was na- tionally publicized and the bus boycotts of Alabama, Hoover was put in charge of a program known as Cointelpro, which monitored the Activities of Black Na-


COINTELPRO was integral in the assi- nation of Malcolm X. The main objective of cointelpro was


the prevention of a Black maessiah who could unify and electrify the masses of Black people. This figure was seen as the biggest threat to national security and they used any means necessary to neutralize such a threat. MLK was seen as a potential messiah if he abandon his obedient doctrine to white america and embrace Black Nationalism. In 1967, MLK had a meeting with the Honorable Elijah Muhammad during his visit to Chicago. The FBI had knowledge of this meeting and retrieve information of MLK’s agreement with some of Elijah Muhammad’s beliefs, such as friendship was detrimental to the plans for Black America by the FBI and CIA. MLK had to be neutralized at once. His stance on in- ternational affairs sealed his faith. he had too much influence and had the ability to unite Blacks from all over the world, ex- pecially Black muslims and christians. he was assasinated one year later on ¸pril 4, 1968.
