But deep within the darkness of the African mind, there was a spirit that transcended knowledge, wisdom and understanding, an inner light that couldn’t be kindled. It caused them to resist and fight their oppression. For hundreds of years, they were made to believe they were animals and were kept form learning and achiev- ing their true potential. Their natural talents and abilities were utilized for the sole benefit the slave masters’ lives and society. Whenever and wherever Black people were held in captivity, they were inspired to resist and be free. From the first kidnapping of a slave from Africa to the betrayal at this moment, Blacks have resisted their oppression and exploita- tion.

THE REBELLIONS: Slavery and imperialism was resisted
since day one. They would teach their children customs of their original tribe despite the threat of punishment, and African chiefs, and princes lead success- ful rebellions after they were brought to America. Several Blacks born into slav- ery in the Americas also led successful rebellions: the Bahia Rebellion of Brazil, the Haitian Revolution (led by Toussaint L’Ouverture where they defeated both the French and British forces), Chaka Zulu, Queen Nzinga of West Africa (who fought Portuguese forces during the slave trade), Nat Turner, and Harriet Tubman.
