NORWEGIAN ‘GUERRILLA GARDENING’ AT ARCHITECTURE FESTIVAL
PUSHAK, an all-female Norwegian architectural practice, has won a competi- tion to create a ‘guerrilla gardening’ installation for The Architecture Foundation on Tooley Street, SE1, to be launched in June 2010 at the London Festival of Architecture. The installa- tion, part of the Architecture Foundation’s international exchange programme, will feature ‘moss graffiti’ and a spectacular moss landscape. PUSHAK’s approach to design is based on under- standing local conditions such as climate and available natural and human resources. Based on these principles, PUSHAK’s installation takes its inspiration from both guerrilla gardening’s origins in south London* and one of the focus areas of this year’s Festival – the Bankside Urban Forest. PUSHAK’s installation is the official Norwegian participation of the International Architecture Showcase, partnership between the British Council and the Architecture Foundation at London Festival of Architecture 2010. It was made possible through the sponsorship of the Royal Norwegian Embassy, and the support of Jackson Coles.

Work completed on showcase Bradford schools
Race Cottam Associates has completed work on a £12 million landmark scheme to co-locate a special educational needs and mainstream primary school in West Yorkshire. The showcase development has seen the main- stream primary Merlintop, and Phoenix, a special educational needs (SEN) primary school, brought together to create a
campus approach and ensure greater pupil integration. Education design specialists Race Cottam worked closely with governors, head teachers, staff, parents, pupils and other stake- holders to create a design which incorporates sufficient and flexible accommodation for personalised learning, inclusion and extended schools provision.
Race Cottam were appointed by Educo, a joint venture be- tween leading UK construction firm Costain and multinational Ferrovial Agromán, to deliver this project, which was funded by Bradford Council and the Government’s Primary Capital Programme. Keith Williams Architects Win American Institute of Architects Award
Keith Williams was among leading UK architects award- ed (Wednesday 14 April 2010) under the AIA UK Excellence in Design Awards Programme for his Wexford Opera House, a project, which Williams’ office undertook jointly with the Irish Government’s Office of Public Works. The awards ceremony took place at the Lillian Bayliss studio at Sadler’s Wells in London.
W
exford Opera House was described by the jury as an exceptional
insertion into Wexford’s historic skyline. The jury admired the skill with which this very large build- ing has been embedded in the town such that from many an-
gles it was barely noticeable yet from the waterfront its large scale has been successfully orchestrated through careful arrangement of its forms, resulting in a rich townscape composition alongside Wexford’s two Puginian church spires. Inter- nally the scale and elegance of the main auditorium, which only revealed itself after entering a modest entrance door in a mod- est street, impressed, heightening the sense of drama on entering the building. Overall, the Opera House was noted as making an exceptional contribution to its urbanity whose designers had understood to a very sophisticat- ed level how best to respond to the spirit and grain of its locale and its context.
The other five awards were given for:
• The Neues Museum : David Chipperfield & Julian Harrap
• Campus Palmas Altas : Rogers Stirk & Harbour
• A House in Gollen, West Cork : Niall McLaughlin
• Westminster Academy : AHMM
• A composter in Edinburgh : Groves-Raines Architects
These Awards are highly valued by architects because they confer trans-Atlantic recognition. Entries are sought from architects based in Britain, and from architects
