Solid state cinema

Solid State, has completed yet another prestigious cinema project at Newbury’s magnificent new Vue cinema. Working on behalf of Dicks Electrical, a team of engineers from the Lancashire-based BAFE- SP203 accredited specialist electrical company

installed a wealth of life safety equipment, including a fire alarm system, voice alarm system and call sys- tem, in record time. SigNET’s powerful single-zone LINX voice alarm system is now in operation at the state-of-the-art 7-screen site and acts as a combined public address/voice alarm/background music sys- tem. In the event of an emergency, the system will automatically broadcast pre-recorded messages and includes all of the features of larger life-safety VA/PA systems in a compact wall-mounting swing frame rack. Key elements of the fire alarm system, including aspiration units, door retainers and beam detectors, are powered by a range of 24V 3A power supplies manufactured by C-TEC. One of C-TEC’s highly versatile and cost-effective four-zone NC944 call controllers has also been installed.

Burns and timber

James Jones & Sons, Timber Systems Division Ltd, are supplying JJI-Joists and BJ-Beams to the world class Robert Burns Birthplace Museum project, cur- rently underway at the Scottish bard’s birthplace in Alloway, Ayrshire. The UK manufactured, FSC cer- tified, JJI-Joists and the BJ-Beams will be used throughout the ground and first floors and in the roof structure of the new Museum. 5668 l/m JJIs will be used and 170 l/m BJ- Beams. The National Trust for Scotland’s £21m project features a stun- ning modern design from architects Simpson and Brown, with engineering design by Buro Happold, incorporating a striking wave-shaped roof support- ed by a timber frame main structure, constructed from locally-sourced Douglas fir. Going halogen-free

A Draka halogen-free cable has again been chosen for one of the capital’s landmark buildings. This time it was the Foster & Partners’ award-winning Willis Tower, London. Among the building’s many noteworthy accolades is its progressive environmental strategy. It achieved the BREEAM [Building Research Establish- ment Environmental Assessment Method] “Excellent” rating and improved on the of- ficial carbon reduction targets by over 20 percent. The cable chosen for the project’s fire detection and alarm system was Draka’s FT30 – until recently called Firetufplus Easystrip – 0HLS cable that provided the project with the essential superior flame re- tardancy and circuit integrity, while making a substantial contribution to the speed and ease of fitting for the installation contrac- tor, E A Electrical. FT30 is claimed to offer contractors the fastest sheath removal that drastically cuts cable termination times. It is also the most flexible cable of its type, with a bending radius that is the smallest achiev- able without deforming or kinking the cable. The cable’s twisted-core construction is designed to ensure improved signal clarity.

Flow Controls

have been installed into a new dam, near Devil’s Bridge, on the Blackburn Brook, just outside Sheffield. JBA Consulting specified two of the large flow control devices to reduce the risk of flooding on the nearby Thorncliffe Industrial Estate, and sur- rounding residential areas. The Blackburn Brook runs

through a 500 m long culvert beneath the Thorncliffe Industrial Estate. The small weir, situated on the brook, creates a holding capacity of just 4000 cu.m; this isn’t large enough to provide protection from flooding. As a result, the industrial estate and nearby housing have suffered flood damage and disruption. A dam, creating a potential storage capacity of 32,000 cu.m, is therefore being constructed, approximately 300 m upstream of the culvert, to alleviate this. João Santa-Clara, consulting engineer, JBA Consulting, commented: “By installing two 1098 mm diameter Hydro-Brake® Flow Control devices, we can control the water flow to match the maximum capacity of the culvert, without the stored water taking excessive land in a restricted area and country park.”

DEFRA INSTALL VELFAC

VELFAC windows have been installed at the DE- FRA-owned Dragonfly House in Norwich, rated as Excellent by BREEAM for its demonstration of the highest environmental construction standards. De- signed by Aukett Fitzroy Robinson, the office building – new home to the Broads Authority, Environment Agency, and Natural England – uses large areas of VELFAC glazing both to enhance the contemporary external design, and to maximise natural light in the interior. VELFAC windows are also used to create a

dramatic main entrance, formed from a window wall and glazed screen rising the full height of the four storey building. VELFAC windows feature in many BREEAM-rated Excellent developments, specified for the glazing's use of sustainable raw materials and manufacturing practices, detailed in full life cycle analyses, and backed by the company's commitment to reduce environmental impact.
