A new publication from heat transfer special- ists, Alfa Laval, sets out to de-mystify the topic of District Heating (DH) by explaining the ter- minology, examining the history and setting out the prospects for its increased use in the UK. Running to a compact 26 pages, the Alfa Laval Guide to District Heating reveals the surprising fact that the concept is not as cutting edge as we, perhaps, have been led to believe. Scandi- navian cities such as Copenhagen have developed the technology to such a degree that more than 90 per cent of homes are heated via DH networks, in the UK only about 1 per cent of homes are connected to a suitable network. The UK Government’s stated aim is to increase this ratio to 14 per cent - or eight million homes – in the future. The Guide spells out salient facts regarding UK energy usage and emissions against a background of dwindling fuel availability, rocketing energy prices and in- creasingly stringent legislation to curb carbon
emissions. For further information, email

NEW CONTRACTS DIVISION FOR MARK WILKINSON
Top architects in the UK and USA are recognising the contribution that Mark Wilkinson Furniture can make to their new-build and high-quality refurbishment projects. The level of interest from architects, interior designers and developers has grown to such an extent that the company has opened a Contracts division. The work of Mark Wilkinson OBE OLM can be found in County and City homes, in Hotels, Pent- houses and in Prestige Boardrooms, while recognition for the classical quality of his design work has long
been confirmed by Estate Agencies such as Savills* and quality developers such as Millgate Homes, who know the attraction that Mark's work has in the minds of the UKs' high worth home owners. Wilkinsons’ early work, in the Seventies, using-dresser based re- claimed Pine furniture, has been recognised by academics as a style that moved the emphasis of the kitchen from a utility, to a social space in our homes.
