A reflection of popularity

A RIBA approved CPD training seminar from GEZE UK is proving a particular hit with today’s chartered architects. The ‘Glass Door Assemblies – Selection and Specification’ seminar, launched in

March 2009, now accounts for nearly 50 per cent of GEZE UK’s CPD presentations. The course forms part of RIBA’s CPD core curriculum. Its content not only provides an overview of the properties of glass, its manufacture, and the different types avail- able, but also covers the standards that need to be followed, and how glass can be used in manual and automatic door systems throughout a building envi- ronment. Other popular RIBA approved CPD seminars offered by GEZE UK include Safety at Powered Doors – Working with BS7036 and Re- moving Barriers to Access. The seminars are held onsite at architectural practices across the UK.

Fast track flooring installation

Ultra Floor Level IT super30 plays an essential role in fast track school flooring installation. Being com- missioned to complete a flooring installation of a classroom, in theory is a relatively straightforward proj- ect. However, when an extremely short timescale is provided the project’s difficulty is increased, and solu- tions are needed to complete efficiently. The project at Christ Church School was scheduled during the 2009 Christmas holidays and only a single day was available to carry out the work. The classroom’s original con- crete substrate required sub- floor preparation before any floor covering could be laid and Jon Hughes, one of CWC Flooring’s Contracts Managers was advised to use Ultra Floor Level IT super30. Ultra Floor’s rapid

TIMBER TRANSFER

Members of the UK Timber Frame Association (UKTFA) have taken the decision to transfer their certification under the former UKTFA Q- Mark and Q Mark Plus schemes to the new BM TRADA Q-Mark for Timber Frame. At the end of last year, the UKTFA announced to mem- bers that from 2010 they would require either UKAS-accredited ISO 9001 quality management certification or BM TRADA product certifica- tion as a condition of membership. The former

schemes have therefore been suspended, but UKTFA members have been offered a direct transfer to a transitional ‘like for like’ replace- ment with BM TRADA, open to designers, fabricators and erectors on the same basis as before, while the new BM TRADA Q-Mark schemes are being developed.

Concentrating on improving our climate

setting concrete leveller, Level IT super30 is capable of accepting foot traffic after just 30 minutes and floor coverings after only three hours. Jon’s team applied Level IT super30 by trowel and at a depth of 3mm to level and prepare the uneven substrate.

Initial feedback from a survey carried out by Hamworthy Heating at Ecobuild 2010 shows clear evidence of a desire within the building industry to cut the impact of building services on climate change. The Hamworthy 2010 Cli- mate Change Survey revealed that two thirds of the respondents felt not enough is current- ly being done to respond to climate change. The results indicate this is largely due to finan- cial constraints. 92 per cent of respondents agreed that it was important or very important to specify sustainable energy sources. Comply- ing with regulations including local planning requirements was the main reason why over a third of respondents felt it necessary to consider renewables. Yet only 16 per cent of specified projects actually go on to see such sustainable sources installed. In most cases this was for financial reasons; 44 per cent of respondents listed budget and return on in- vestment as constraints which stop them from installing specified sustainable solutions. The survey was created by Hamworthy to gather vital facts and opinions on renewable energy and the issues that arise from using such sources instead of gas and conventionally pro- duced electricity. The research aims to clarify what is happening in this rapidly evolving area and to understand from the industry itself what is working and what is not. The survey will continue to run at www.hamworthy-heat- ing.co.uk until 31 May 2010 and Hamworthy is encouraging people to take the opportunity to make their views count. The final analysis will be published later in the summer.
